On the Navsource.org LST page there is a Picture of the Evansville Yard. I was wondering if the 2 large structures with the smokestacks outside the yard(a single L-center and double to the right). Are they still there and what were they?

Both are still there and performing their original functions. The double stack building is SIGECO (Southern Indiana Gas & Electric), our power company. Now it's Vectren.

The single stack building is Reitz High School (where Mike Whicker teaches to this day). That photo is a reverse image. The river is actually on the left in reality and Reitz High school would be to the right of SIGECO.

I've come up with two possible reasons for this anomaly. One is that the trick photography was used to confuse the myriad of Nazi spies that infiltrated the Evansville Shipyard area. And the second proposition put forth is that the original photo was borrowed from the museum and reprocessed and enhanced by Mike Whicker's photography class at Reitz.

I know there is one of the original cranes and I think there are 2 left. It's a Bristol Myers parking lot now and they have an LST memorial there overlooking the river by their fitness center.

Webskipper has a picture of it but unfortunately, he's in the picture also (ouch!).

<font face="comic sans ms" color=navy size=4>I don't think I have that posted on the website. And the only person I remember sending it to is my mother. Or were you just making a WAG? It took me a long time to find it.

I think Bristol Myers deserves a lot of credit for keeping that marker so well-maintained and for having their small museum corridor. These days, many large corporations couldn't care less and wouldn't bother.

Anyway, here's the shipyard memorial marker with some ugly dude holding onto it for support ...
