Steam Key Delivery And Preliminary Release Dates

We've recently started delivering Steam keys for lifetime members. Find instructions at forums 'LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP SECTION' which is accessible only for those who've got the lifetime membership and their forum accounts upgraded to 'honorary lifetime supporter' group.

In case of questions about lifetime membership view and scroll Donations FAQ to find out about it.

If you've got the lifetime membership but don't have forum account upgraded yet fill this form:

After the form has been processed (usually within 24 hours) we'll reply back to let you know the content is available for your forum account.

I'll finalize and confirm 3.30 release dates this weekend but the preliminary plan now is to release Steam version on 26th and free version on 29th.

At turn of the month we'll also put lifetime membership subscription to pause for some time and consider if it's reasonable to open again after the release rumble eases. If you really must, you can still obtain lifetime membership but it won't be that actively promoted as a donation option. This is because we have to think how to proceed with collaboration of paid Steam version and donation-based development - and because of these are extremely busy times and I want to avoid any extra desk work.

I don't think it's ever to late to become a lifetime supporter.
You get everything forever! Most worthwhile $35 US I ever spent on a game.

It's not too late. (And we aren't really into too strict black-and-white rules, expiration dates or deadlines.)

I'll be honest: I hate Steam. I hate it beyond hate, because it is a huge DRM: you buy a game and it's not yours, not to mention "big brother" monitors everything you do on Steam.
However, I totally understand why UrW is now on Steam. I believe it was a smart move, and I really hope it will give UrW more funds for further development. In addition, all those people who only use Steam for gaming (and sadly, there are lots of them) will have the opportunity to play a really different, unique game instead of those popular brainless games with shiny weapons, fancy graphics, and zero gameplay.
To that end, I think all lifetime members should use their Steam key, and post a very positive review on Steam to promote UrW there.

However, I believe you should also consider GoG. I know this means some extra paperwork which I guess Sami hates (as I do) - "why wasting time in bureaucratic nonsense while that time can be used to implement that new game feature I have in mind?". Nevertheless, the paperwork needed is much less than Steam's. It is a pity UrW is not in GoG games, because GoG is totally DRM-free, and is also very popular. I realize it's not the right time to do that move, at least not until UrW on Steam is set up completely, but after that GoG is definitely an option you should not put aside.

In the end, I'll have to admit the old donation system (or the even older straight payment system via UrW website) are way more authentic and I guess it fits Sami and Erkka better. Nevertheless, times change, and we all have to adapt ourselves to the modern times somehow.

Alas, GoG doesn't share your belief :)
When Desura wen't bankcrupt, we filled the contact form on GoG site. After taking a look at UrW they replied that they don't think UrW would suit their publishing policy. Or, to be more spesific, and if I remember correctly, they thought that UrW appeals only to a dedicated niche audience.
In the end, I'll have to admit the old donation system (or the even older straight payment system via UrW website) are way more authentic and I guess it fits Sami and Erkka better. Nevertheless, times change, and we all have to adapt ourselves to the modern times somehow.
Yeah, Steam is never going to replace anything - direct downloads from the official website will continue. We will just see how to best keep everything in balance.

My security advisor has the Valve Corp and its affiliates on a restricted list he updates for me every month or so. It would be very unlikely for me to go against his advice. Hopefully the game will continue to be available outside of steam for a long time even if updates are delayed.

"Steam release" means simply that the exact same version of the game will be available both at the game official homepage, and at steam.

If UrW appeals only to a dedicated "niche" audience, then I wonder what exactly is the audience of crappy games with a ton of blood and sadistic scenes like "Carmaggedon", "Hot line Miami" and many others (that ARE on GoG)...
Sad to say this, but shame on you, GoG.

I am a long time member of GOG community, and although I'm not at all happy that the store snubbed URW for distribution there, I have to say that perhaps they are not completely in the wrong. A lot of business decisions with GOG over the years was looking at the wishlist and figuring out which games the community would like to buy the most (not always, but most of the time). Usually, there are more than a few thousant votes on a given popular game. URW unfortunately currently has 100 votes. URW on GOG wishlist

I will continue to try to persuade the powers that be and given time (and the success of the steam release), they might reconsider. Maybe.

Yup, and for the sake of clarification: when we got that reply from GoG staff, we just thought "OK, so maybe we can try again later on." Personally, I do admit that I did zero research before we filled the submit form - I didn't know anything about the GoG process of approving a game. Like, are they just checking that the product is free of malware and there is no copyright violations involved, or do they have any tighter criteria to what gets through.

So, we just filled in the form to initiate the process and to see what happens. Now, thinking of it, it seems that getting on GoG might require a bit more of a campaign - getting more votes on the wishlist etc. Well, let's first see how it goes with the Steam, and in the future we might reconsider GoG.
