They use something called Elo as described here.
I'm not convinced it works as well for baseball as for other sports, because the margin of victory doesn't always mean as much. But they do account for things that probably do (starting pitcher, travel schedule for example), and their predictions aren't a whole lot different from some others I've seen.
The Sox winning the AL East is a consensus, which of course worries me.
