Braves deal Hummel as playoffs loom
WATERLOO The Kitchener-Waterloo Braves sent erstwhile forward Matt Hummel to the Brampton Excelsiors in a Jr. A lacrosse trade deadline deal.

The Braves dealt away the rights to Hummel, in his final season of Jr. A eligibility, in exchange for three players and undisclosed cash.

The Braves receive Steve Hinek, currently playing Jr. B in Windsor; Steve Hutchinson, another Jr. B player in Elora; and Chad Cummings, who is out of lacrosse this season due to a broken wrist.

Hummel, a 21-year-old Kitchener native, left the Braves early this season to play Jr. B lacrosse for the Elora Mohawks.

Of the three Braves acquisitions, only Hinek is in his final junior season.

Hutchinson is the Excelsiors 2011 first-round draft pick and has four junior seasons remaining.

Cummings, who played for the Excelsiors the past couple seasons, is expected to join the Braves next season.

The Braves hope both Hinek and Hutchinson will hook up with them later this year after their Jr. B seasons conclude and in time for the Braves playoff run, said K-Ws general manager Randy Tollefson.

Tollefson said he expects to see Hummel in the Excelsiors lineup on Friday night when the Braves visit Brampton.

We want to see (Hummel) do well and if trading him can help strengthen our team, thats all the better, said the GM.

The Braves also tried unsuccessfully to deal the rights to Dan Keane, another former team member in his final junior season. He is also playing Jr. B in Elora.

The deals just werent right, Tollefson said.

Heading into Thursday nights home game against Burlington, the Braves were in seventh place, sporting a 7-8 record.

Two weeks remain in the regular schedule.

The top eight teams in the 12-team Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. A loop advance to the post season.

Our goal is to get into the top five or six and see what happens in the playoffs, Tollefson said.

Kitchener GM mentions that they expects to see Hummel in Brampton's lineup, interesting as tonight is Game #1 of Elora-London series. I cant see Hummel leaving them now.

Cant see why hummel would leave elora. Brampton is not finishing any higher then 5th and they have no chance at beating the top four. I think he will stay with the mohawks who have a good shot at going to the finals. What a waste for KW no way hinek is going there same with hutchinson he has it good with the mohawks.
