blinking computer lights

Does anyone know how they made the timed blinking lights for comptuers - before comptuers.
Curious what they used to program the lights on the original star trek.

thats an interesting idea. I just read somewhere that the warp core effect from Star Trek the motion picture - was done with spinning mylar and lasers.

Does anyone know how this effect was created.
I am thinking its a mabye mylar and a motor projected on a peice of plexi.
