On MLB Network they were questioning why they took Veras out so soon, pointing out he was a closer for much of the year. And in hindsight (always easy, of course), I might have just pitched around Ortiz, hoping that he fishes for something. At worst it's a walk and a three-run lead, and then you go after the next hitter. Ortiz has just come up big in those late-game situations at Fenway too many times.

And I agree with Ed on the pitch count thing. I'm not advocating 1968 and Mickey Lolich tossing three complete games, and the last on two days' rest, but we've become slaves to the pitch count. If Verlander is going well, let him go 130-135.
