I was looking through the gallery at the Indian Gum images and noticed a marking on several of the cards. The mark is a circle with what appears to be a "C" in the middle, some other letters curved over the C and what looks like a date curved below the C. This mark seems to be on the fronts and backs of the Series of 216 and the Series of 264. It also seems to be on the fronts only of the Series of 48 High Numbers, Series of 288 High Numbers, and Series of 312 White Backgrounds.
I know very little about these cards and was curious as to what this mark is (an enlarged copyright?) and if anyone has any thoughts why it appears on some of the cards, but not others?
I am fairly sure copyrights were done on a card-by-card basis.
I think a card was sent to Washington, given a copyright number,
and returned with a 3x5 card noting the information. 3x5 cards
were auctioned just a few years ago for either baseball or football
The Wrapper Magazine many years ago had an article on Sal Visali,
a NJ collector, who somehow came into many of these "3x5 copyright cards"
The below is the result of a "Google Book search", showing copyright info
for a number of Indian Gum cards. Strange that no series was mentioned.
THIS ONE IS FOR YOU, JERRY !!!
As you can see, many copyright numbers were
issued for these BB and IG cards.
