He was ill and thought this later, recuperating

"Better this," he said
to himself.
The vinegar smell

he remembers.
The saturated sheets,
cold chills,

sweat. Biting
his finger, teeth
marks form letters

that rise like bread.
A book, pages
of raw dermis.

The part
the animal gnaws off
to live.
"I hear the wind blow,
And I feel that it was worth being born
just to hear the wind blow."

~Fernando Pessoa, from “Uncollected Poems”
