• It was late in the morning, almost time for lunch and Alexei stood outside the bridal shop waiting for his mother to arrive. She was supposed to be here ten minutes ago, but as usual she was fashionably late. He glanced down at his watch and scoffed, this was typical of her. Honestly, the bridal shop was the one place he had no interest in going. It wasn’t that he had no interest in the wedding, okay there really was no explanation as to why he wasn’t so thrilled about the whole thing. Perhaps it was because he didn’t want to sign up with The Vow in the first place, but he had to please his mother. It could also be that at the moment it’s only going to be him alone with his mother. He could hear her now, talking about her future grandchildren and how she cannot wait to be a grandmother again.

Earlier that morning Alexei was sitting on the couch with Lyla leaned up against him as he read a book and she was on her laptop doing homework. That was before she received a phone call from her mother and changed her plans with Alex. They were supposed to go tuxedo shopping with his mother, but Lyla insisted that everything would be fine. There was no convincing Lyla’s mother to postpone the plans, so he had to settle. It took about an hour for Lyla to get ready before she soon disappeared and another couple hours passed before it was time for him to go.

Needless to say, he was not looking forward to doing this with his mother. She would call this ‘bonding time’, but in Alex’s mind this was torture. Who in their right mind would want to spend hours alone with his mother? Maybe Nat or even Lyla. Grabbing his phone from his pocket he began dialing her number, he was not going to do this on his own. If she didn't answer he was going to reschedule the appointment and head home. Then he heard voices from behind, both were familiar, one was his mother's. He stopped the call and slowly turned his head around to confirm the owner of the other voice. This wasn't part of the deal that he had made with Lyla.

  • Jenna had spent that morning with her face in her pillow, her eyes squeezed shut even though she wasn't asleep. She was mentally tired but physically she wanted to get up and move. Her eyes were just sore, maybe she pushed herself she could sleep past ten but today that just wasn't happening. Finally getting up, she changed into a pair of yoga pants and a t-shirt before plugging in her earphones into her phone and placing them into ears. Soon Katy Perry's Roar was blaring as she soon put on her sneakers.

She had just leaned over to tie one when her phone buzzed, causing her song to stop and for her to remove her earphones when she recognized the name. "This is Jenna…oh hey." It was Lyla. She had been rather sure that their contract was terminated after the incident but instead the young woman was babbling about one thing or another before another woman took the phone. Lena Danver. She knew the woman well, even if they hadn't seen each other in awhile. Regardless she was asking her a favor. Help Alex find a tux? Really? She wasn't sure what he thought about this but after pressing her lips together she finally opened her mouth.

    "I'll do it."

At this point her anger had simmered since the incident and she was doing this for Lyla and Mrs. Danver. Even if it made him uncomfortable, that didn't mean she couldn't show up and provide a helping hand. Sure it would be awkward and she was ninety percent sure that he was going to pick a fight with her, but a favor was a favor. After hanging up she immediately returned her room, selecting a few clothing items from her closet and laying them on her bed before proceeding to the bathroom to take a shower. If she was seeing her ex today, she was going to make sure he knew that she was doing just fine without him. Even if she spent most nights watching K-Dramas and eating junk food, but honestly he didn't need to know that.

He hadn't broken her, he hadn't won. Jenna was still standing on her own two feet and was more persistent then ever to prove she was doing just fine even if she did have a couple of coping mechanisms still holding her back. Soon she was dressed, her hair tied into a pony tail after she had dried it and was soon out the door, leaving only a note on the fridge to alert her sister that she would be out working today. Placing her purse into the basket of her bike, she was soon using the bike lane to find the Ever After Bridal Shoppe.

She had been here countless times before and her usual spot on the bike rack was free. Once she had parked and locked up she found herself lingering by the rack, afraid that she wouldn't be able to open it when a familiar voice disrupted her thoughts. "Jenna darling! There you are, I was hoping to catch you before you ran into Alex." And there was Lena Danver, adjusting her sunglasses and moving her manicured hands in a confident manner. "Don't slouch and come this way, he's waiting for us." And now Jenna was being shuffled forward, rather speechless as the older woman whiskered her to the front of the show where a familiar figure loomed.

That asshole. Why did he have to look so good in a suit? Why was his mother even here? Why had she been told to come as a favor if Lena decided show up anyway? And now she couldn't leave. "Now there he is! Doesn't he look dashing? He'll look even better in a tux, don't you think?" There she was filling the silence again, Jenna had to hand it to her, Lena was great at pushing things forward. "Ah, yes, he certainly does." she murmured, her voice quieter than usual as she tried not to cross her arms in dismay. That was not proper conduct for a wedding planner, even if she really didn't want to be here now. Damn it.

Once Alex had turned around and she could see his face now she soon changed expressions, deciding that confident and cheerful would be her best bet today. He could sulk all he wanted, it was clear he hadn't been expecting her. "Good day Alex." she said stiffly before Lena was already opening the door and shuttling them into the shoppe. "Oh look at that one Alex! It has ruffles, so classic!" the older woman gushed before following them inside with glee. Jenna's stomach flipped as she glanced away from the party she was now with and to Madam Zoila, the seamstress she often worked with when she came by. "Jenna! Back again I see. Is this another groom and his mother here to find the perfect ensemble? Wonderful. Please, come come." the woman murmured immediately before motioning for them to sit.

Jenna found herself sitting down on one of the available coaches, watching Madam Zoila asking Alex to stand in front of the three-way mirror so that she could take measurements. Soon she was crossing her ankles, glancing at a magazine hoping her opinion wouldn't be needed much. Zoila however soon had her standing up. "You're about the bride's height aren't you Jenna? Stand beside Alexei so I can see how to adjust the bow tie." Her nose twitched before Jenna finally rose, nodding quietly as she had to stand next to Alex. Someone shoot her now. "Like this?" she murmured before Lena was pushing her even closer, she could practically breathe on him now. She tried not to look up but the only other place to look was his chest. Fuck.

"Perfect! Now stand just like that…" Zoila murmured before writing things down. Well at least someone was happy about the current situation. Jenna was just trying not to breathe on her ex while still following their instructions. Honestly the man was a jerk, she shouldn't be so self-concious about how pissed he probably was. In fact she should've be reveling in his obvious anger. It wasn't happening and at this point all she wanted to do was hide and get away from his stupid face. It always looked like a teddy bear when he was angry and she had to resist the urge to tap a finger against his nose and yell boop. But that was before, now things were just grossly awkward and hostile. Half an hour, she just had to deal with this for half an hour before making an excuse and walking away. And then no more Alex. It was for the best, really.

This was just too much of a coincidence for Jenna to be here and his mother was way too ecstatic about the situation. He straightened himself up as he watched the women approach him, his arms crossed as his eyes narrowed down on his mother. She couldn’t see them through his sunglasses, but he was beyond pissed about this. “What is she doing here? Lyla and I agreed to not use a wedding planner.” He said, but his mother just ignored his words and spoke to Jenna. Rolling his eye Alex removed his sunglasses and put them away. He looked over at Jenna as she greeted him. “Hey.” he said as scoffed and he walked away. She was the last person he wanted to see.

They followed his mother inside and his arms stayed crossed, ignoring what his mother was going on about. Most likely gushing over some tacky tuxedo that she was dying for Alexei to try on, but that wasn’t going to happen. Alexei smiled at the woman that called out to Jenna and extended his hand, “Alexei Danver.” He said and then his mother went over and gave her a hug after he was done shaking the older lady’s hand, they probably knew each other. She asked him to stand in front of a mirror while she went to get his measurements while Jenna and Lena took a seat on the couches.

Everything was going fine until he heard Zolia ask Jenna a question, shouldn’t she be asking him? “She’s shorter.” He said, but Jenna got up anyways and stood beside him. Alex inched away as Lena pushed Jenna closer, then with a finger on his arm Zolia gestured him to move closer. “Is this really necessary?” Lyla should have came with him instead of wandering off to do something else. His eyes glanced over to Jenna, he had forgotten just how short she was next to him. “Why did you come?” He asked quietly as Zolia and Lena were discussing something in the background and then a phone rang. “It’s your father, I’ll be right back.” He glanced at his mother from the mirror and watched as she walked away. “I’ve got to find my pin cushion.” Zolia said as she scurried off to the back. She peeked her head back, “Don’t you dare move.” and like that she disappeared. Her tone hinted that she was being playful, but something about the look in her eyes said otherwise.

Alex moved away and pulled out his phone, he could feel his heart rate raising just being close to Jenna. He was enraged that she had decided to come and shoved his phone back into his pocket. “What were you thinking when you agreed to come?” She should have known that he wouldn’t have approved of this. Alex shook his head and chuckled, “You’d assume with how many people live in this town it would be easy for us to avoid one another, don’t you think?” He asked, not expecting an answer from her. “You can leave,” he lifted his arm and with his hand pointed to the door. “I’ll come up with an excuse for you. You don’t want to be here just as much as I don’t want to see your face.” Looking at her frustrated him and made his blood boil. Never had he felt so much hatred and anger, and it was all directed to one person.

"She's here because Lyla and I asked her to stand in, now be a good boy and behave just this once."

Alexei wasn't exactly the person she wanted to see today either but she was doing this as a favor for his mother and Lyla. Though his mother didn't exactly help the situation. He wasn't about sit around and refuse to see him just because it was better, well she wanted to but only after she did this one thing and ran off into the distance like a unicorn. That was basically her plan right now. "It's good to see you too." Jenna replied sarcastically as she rolled her eyes at the lump of a man as he walked off. Really they couldn't be adults here? He had to play the brooding asshole card just because it suited him? He played it well, she was already thoroughly annoyed.

After the introductions between Alexei and the Madam Zoila were taken care of she hoped to god this was just an approval thing for his suit so she could walk out and get on with her life. It just felt like a needle was being stabbed into her again and again just so whoever was doing it could watch her bleed. It made her sick to her stomach. Could she run yet? Soon the two older women dispersed, leaving her snugged up close to Alex, not daring to move. Dammit. Did she have to stand here all day next to the one person that made her blood boil? It was bad enough that he was getting married and she almost be nixed from the guest list until Lyla and his mother decided that a planner was needed and her attendance was mandatory.

That meant she had to seem him more time after today but at least she was in no way shape or form needing to be involved with this pig. Soon he would be married of to his southern bride and all would be left forgotten. She felt considerably hotter standing next to him though, like their body heat decided to turn into an inferno. It was annoying, he was annoying, but she had to endure this. She could handle it, Jenna had handled worse. Though she hadn't been the ex then, just the person that had to make things right. Well. Today she felt like she was failing. Once the older women were out of earshot doing whatever it was they wandered off to do (honestly Jenna hadn't been paying attention), she found herself staring at Alex's chest. Not the vantage point she was looking.

And then he had to open his big mouth. Jenna was surprised that he was declaring that he was god himself and commanded her to leave. "Perhaps it's just one thing they can giggle over as they pretend this isn't awkward." she muttered darkly as she tried to glance elsewhere. It was harder than she thought and her skin was prickling with a sense of…well something, she couldn't quite describe. When he spoke again, she rolled her eyes. She had spoken too soon. "Mmm…well just for that I'm going to stay. You're just gonna have to deal with my face until they return and this whole charade is over. Don't think for one second that this is enjoyable though, I'd rather watch paint dry." Letting out a loud 'hmph', Jenna glanced away again, wishing she could fold her arms but that movement might have caused her to touch Alex and that she would not do.

His mother spoke after he removed his sunglasses and put them away. “This was Lyla’s idea then?” In what world was Lyla living in to even think of the idea of Jenna standing in her place to help pick out a tuxedo for him to get married in? She knew that he had every intention on marrying her once and now even Jenna knew of that, all thanks to that one dreadful New Year’s Eve. “Or was this your idea? You were supposed to be helping Lyla, not Jenna.” Here he was doing his best to please his fiancee and be the man that she deserved to marry, yet Jenna was there complicating things as always when she was nearby. Her presence alone agitated him and put him on edge, it always had after their falling out.

He bit his tongue, wanting to tell her to ‘shut up’ as she sassed him as he turned around with his hands in his pockets and walked towards the quaint little bridal shop. “I know. It’s always good to see me.” She had to understand where he was coming from and if she didn’t, then she really was clueless for her own good. In all reality, he figured that she was just trying to be helpful and generous. That was one of the things he had admired about her while they were together, how she always wanted to help others no matter what. But he would think that in this situation, she would have politely turn down his mother and ‘no’.

For the most part Alexei had stayed quiet and to himself while Madam Zolia was taking his measurements as she talked her mouth off with his mother in between giving him directions, they were gossiping about some Mrs. Johnson and how she had some sort of boy toy always visiting her house late at night. Alex chuckled a few times not really knowing what he was agreeing to when Madam Zolia would say, ‘Isn’t that right?’ Really, he was just acknowledging her and hoping that she would just get on with what they had gone there for in the first place.

The process did seem to take longer than he had hoped, they had only been there for about ten minutes, but they weren’t anywhere near being finished. He avoided looking at Jenna until she was called over to stand in front of him. He could feel her body heat radiating off of her from where he was standing at and his eyes looked straight ahead. His question being ignored all but Jenna responded. “Is it awkward for you?” He asked as he glanced down at her and grinned for a moment before looking back at his mother and Madam Zolia whom both decided to leave the room, warning them not to move.

Ha! Like hell, he couldn’t be bossed around. He was a grown man and could do whatever the hell he wanted. Such as demanding for Jenna to make her leave, though she had other plans. “Oh.” A devious smile spread across his face as she appeared to be pouting and refusing to leave with the mention of him not wanting to see her face. “Fine, stay. It’s more of a punishment for you than it is for me.” He moved a bit closer to her intentionally wanting to make her feel uncomfortable so she could make the decision on her own to leave. “How is your boyfriend doing?”

Lena didn't have an answer for her son, instead she offered him in a smirk before glancing at her fingernails as if thoroughly amused. Jenna on the other hand was watching the woman with a perplexed look, she actually had the same questions herself, but as the wedding planner she had just make the tuxedo fit and then she could go home and pretend that life didn't just implode on itself today. Or at least her life. The sun was shining and it was clear everyone else's was just dandy. And for once that wasn't her outlook, at least not with Alex close by being an asshole.

"I know. It's always good to see me."

Jenna couldn't help it, she was cursing at him in three different languages in her head and it was all because he was an infuriating bastard. Did he get his kicks by being a jerk? Was that it? It made her blood boil to think that just because he was rich and narcissistic that he could get away with being a jerk to people without repercussions. Even if he was a cute jerk that didn't take away from the fact and he had a big stupid face anyway. He wasn't even scary, just kind of pathetic when he narrowed his eyes and stomped his feetlike a child. Scratch that, Alexei was a child. A big overgrown child that threw tantrums and threw away his toys when he didn't want them anymore.

She had almost missed the question until she realized he was speaking to her. "No. Is it for you?" she shot back, glaring at his chest like it was a bug she intended to squish. Jenna couldn't help but feel taht he was enjoying this. Probably every minute of it. He was sadistic, that was for sure. "Punishment? I'm doing just fine thank you. I think it's you that has the problem." Now she wished that she knew more languages to curse him out in. French and Scottish weren't enough.

And he just had to bring up a boyfriend. Jenna didn't exactly have one. In fact her Vow match failed before it had a chance to blossom. But was she really going to bring that up? No. "He's fine. We're doing great." Lies. All lies. "He's taller than you, ya know. He's a doctor." Might as well lay it on think, not that Alexei would look into it anyway. No she was safe as long as he didn't ask to meet him. And if he did…Jenna would have to come up with an excuse. "How's Lyla?" She didn't hate her really, but it was a punch to the gut to remind herself that Alexei was marrying that girl and not her. Fuck.

She was rather persistent on staying and doing her so-called duties. Though if she wanted to do her job properly she would have turned down planning his wedding. “Not at all. I always enjoyed being this close to you.” Alex smirked as she continued to avoid looking up at him. “Oh you're doing fine?” He asked and took a step foreword to where they were barely touching, wanting to make her feel uncomfortable around him. Which backfired for himself as he felt his skin crawl just by being closer to her, Alex however ignored the feeling. “Are you sure?” Maybe then she would make her leave and it would make things just that much easier.

Jenna went on talking about her new boyfriend. With a sigh he rolled his eyes already annoyed. He didn't want to say that he could care less as to who she was going to marry, maybe when her turn camd he would actually give a damn and put more effort to care more. He wanted the best for Jenna… She deserved the best and that obviously wasn't him. “Pardon me.” He quickly added before she could give him more unnecessary information about her new beau, “You must have mistaken me for someone who actually cared. Figure I stopped you before you told me his zodiac sign or favorite color.” He wasn't hurt more than he was jealous that she had been able to move on quickly and here he was marrying the girl he only met thanks to The Vow. “I'm sorry.” He murmured, the words came out of spite and the last thing he wanted to do was have her hate him even more than she did already.

At the mention of Lyla’s name he looked away from Jenna, “She's doing well.” Was all he had to offer to her. Their marriage felt like it was more of a business contract more than anything. With her father being a huge investor to his father’s company it only seemed like the perfect match made in heaven for his father. “She's been mostly excited about the wedding and always busy with the planning details.” Whenever they spoke of the wedding it was mostly just what Lyla wanted and when he brought up ideas they were dismissed. Surely it was because she had so much in her mind that she didn't hear him.

Which reminded him, “You never answered my previous question. What were you thinking when you agreed to come? It's not as though you're Lyla’s friend, was this just for the money?” She better had a good reason and not just because she didn't want to be rude. This was how she was easily taken advantage of.

Alexei Danver was an asshole. That she knew to be a fact. Jenna really didn't like talking bad about people but for him she had to make an exception. Maybe she knew him too well, that was sometimes a thing, but she was just being honest. She wanted this to be as quick and painless as possible. That seemed downright impossible when he was involved. Part of her wanted to strangle him, part of wanted to touch him…but the latter was being ignored and thoughts of vengeance for his last comment were instead blooming in her mind. Why did he have to be so rude? It wasn't like they were the ones getting married and they could bicker like an old couple. No he had to sign up for some service and marry a girl barely old enough to vote.

Jenna wasn't bitter about this at all. Nope. "Yes, I am sure." she murmured, her voice monotone. It was either that or icy and she didn't want Alex to know that she felt salty about all of this. She didn't want admit to herself but that was exactly how it felt. And it was taking every shred of self-dignity not to kick him in the shins and cry. No, instead she was going to talk about her amazing non-existent boyfriend that was a doctor and owned a yacht. If only he were real, she wanted so bad to rub his credentials and how much better he was in Alex's face. His apology only softened her rage. Yes rage…not just anger now. Why did he always manage to bring out the worst in her? It was really beginning to piss her off in more ways than one.

She didn't want to respond to his sorry. It wasn't alright, it would never be alright. It wouldn't be alright as long as she stood here and had to endure the fact that Alexei wasn't going to be hers. He would be Lyla's and Jenna couldn't handle it. It drove her crazy - but she couldn't tell him that. Not when he was already going through with the wedding. What they had seemed to be the passed now and picking up the pieces was more painful than ever. And the worst part was he was compelled to torture her regardless if he was in the room or not. "Of course." Jenna finally replied with a stiff nod. Lyla was marrying Alex, having her wedding day. Jenna was just sulking that she wasn't the bride this time. She had never felt like this before. She had never been salty about not being married, not until Alex showed up again and everything went all to hell.

When he urged her to answer his question from before, Jenna swallowed. She had been hoping he hadn't noticed, but Alex did have an eye for detail sometimes. Her dark eyes flickered for a moment, glancing at his suit and then back at the floor, the sensation of feeling lost washing over her. "I dunno. I just..." Needed an excuse to see you again. No she couldn't say that. Then he would've won. "I owed a favor to your mother. I don't care about the money, this wedding is on discount anyway." There he could live with that. He would probably be sour about his wedding being on discount.
