Alix had not had her period in... a long time. She hadn't been concerned at first, because she had noticed it about two weeks ago. Her periods had always been kind of irregular, but they'd never been this far apart, and when Tabs had mentioned it the other day- sort of a casual 'are you pregnant or something?', it had gotten Alix thinking. The last period she remembered having had been in October, and it had been well before she had hooked up with the handsome-but-slightly-awkward engineer at that conference, and- well. They'd had a few drinks. Alix had always been rather known for her impulsivity and slightly reckless streak, but usually she didn't do anything that ended up like this.
Tabs had introduced Alix to comic books, and it had become a semi-regular thing that they went to the comic book store and then got food. Sometimes it was ice cream, sometimes it was burgers, sometimes it was pizza- you know, couldn't make it too much of a routine. That wasn't either of their style. However, on this particular outing, Alix was burdened with glorious purpose the knowledge that she was, in fact, pregnant. It was an odd situation to be in- she was more or less exclusively sleeping with a woman, and had been for a couple of months, and yet... baby. In her belly. Dear god.
It was because of this that Alix had been unusually quiet and reserved. (Which is to say, Alix was being slightly quiet and reserved.) She poked at her french fries thoughtfully, distracted from whatever Tabs was saying by the unsettling surreal feeling of impending motherhood. That's what three different pregnancy tests had said, anyway. She hadn't even gone to the doctor yet to confirm it for sure for sure, even though she knew she needed to because with her diabetes, pregnancy was probably going to be more complicated, and...
She looked up at her- well, what even were they? Girlfriends? Fuck buddies? Friends with benefits? It was mostly probably the last one, though likely not for long, since Alix was carrying someone else's child. Scheiss. How was Alix even going to tell her? Probably it would be best to bring it up tactfully, in a way that would be subtle and calm and definitely not, "I think I am pregnant." (Of course, blurting it out, completely out of the blue was also an approach.) "I mean... I took 3 pregnancy tests." She sighed and placed her hands on the table, looking at Tabs with mock solemnity. "Unfortunately, I think the timing is all wrong for it to be yours."
Tabitha was happily thumbing through the bags of comics she had procured from the local comic shop, absently chewing on fries. It was a pretty fun excursion that she and Alix regularly did. It was funny to have a routine and a girlfriend. Or at least a girlfriend type situation, anyway. “I really don’t know why guys are so pissy about the new Thor. Like, suck it up, she’s kickass.” She continued on, gesturing with a fry before absently dipping it into her strawberry milkshake before popping it into her mouth, chewing for a moment. “Not like Odinson could get mjolinir to act like it does when she’s holding it. I just wonder how long it’s going to be before we know who she is.” She sighed deeply, reaching for her burger before looking up from the comic stack she was mentally prioritizing from most excited to read to ‘this is awesome but can wait until I read the really cool ones’.
She noticed that Alix was slightly less energetic than she had been but Tabs wasn’t really interested in prying. The redheaded woman tended to be pretty straightforward when she had something on her mind, which was honestly what made them work so well. Aside from the fact that Alix was gorgeous and just as colorful as Tabs was and just plain fun. But she was getting worried, it had been a little while that Alix had been like this and their eyes met across the table. “Hey, are you al-?” She had started, however, Alix had beaten her to the punch and dropped the bombshell of surprising news onto their little lunch date.
Tabs set her half eaten cheese burger (extra thousand island, with bacon, one pickle) onto the wrapper she’d just plucked it from. Her head tilted slightly as she processed this. “Well, shit, we should have been more careful with all that unprotected sex.” She wanted to ask ‘are you sure’ but three pregnancy tests usually didn’t lie and seeing as their cycles had synced up a while back, she was very aware of the fact that Alix had been late. Hence the jokes of her being pregnant in the first place. “Odin’s beard.” She exhaled, “So, uh, I cheated on you.”
