Need paint help

I made a brass hood ornament for my buddy's golf cart. I painted the raised letters red using the paint he supplied then clear coated over it. The clear caused the red to bubble in some areas. The paint is still attached but you can feel an air bubble under it in a couple of areas. I have already repainted the letters twice so am not keen on redoing them. The first question is what did I do wrong, the next is should I leave it alone or do I really have to repaint this thing yet again.

Maybe clear coat lacquer over red acrylic? Try using enamel red base paint instead, then clear coat over. In plastic modelling I'd use Testors enamel red base coat, then use their clear coat over.

The "He Supplied" is the kicker - the paint system for the red was not compatible with the paint system for the clear.  You have to work backwards and start with "I need a Red that will work with this Clear."

So it sounds like I need to strip the red and start over. That is annoying.
