Eliza is a bigger Trekkie (Trekker?) than me, so I asked her for this review: [link=http://templetongate.net/startrekbeyond.htm]Star Trek Beyond[/link].

Thanks for letting me do this, ec. I guess I'll just sign up now to do the review for the next one!

Well, I saw it today, in 3D. I wasn't going to bother, certainly not 3D, except someone else bought my ticket and that's what they wanted.

I've only seen JJ's first effort once, tried to block it out of my memory. Still haven't seen Into Darkness, so can't judge how this one compares. Not impressed with the 3D at all, had to have been converted after initial filming. The scenes I would have expected to be good would be on the space station, but everything still looked relatively flat.

I'm not a fan of 3D. It's one of the few things that will give me a headache. As I said, I found some of the shots to be unwatchable in 2D. I can't even begin to imagine what it would have done to me in 3D.

Some people are saying that this review at Strange Horizons should be nominated for next year's Best Related Work Hugo.
