Another of this year's Nebula finalists, although Amberlough, the debut novel from Lara Elena Donnelly, is not science fiction or fantasy, not even steampunk. It is speculative fiction in that it is set in a fictional country, although undoubtedly patterned after the Weimar Republic. It's well written, with sparkling dialogue, and some interesting characters, but ultimately unsatisfying for me. There were a couple of times I thought I might not finish, then when I did I debated whether I should review it.
