Okay, I was just thinking, in The Outsiders, he was only 15 when they started filming, or around that age, right? Well, wouldn't he have been too young to be allowed to legally smoke? I know they weren't in the book. Did they use real cigarettes, or fake ones? If not, was he allowed to let them smoke?
Thanks! :)

I think he didn't like smoking since he's an athletic type and he tried not to inhale too much?
I think I read that Emilio didn't want to smoke so he changed his part to chewing tobacco but only did that once in the film as it made him physically sick!

I dont know if they used real cigarettes. I always thought they didnt because in the hospital with Dallas, you can see that his cigarette breaks (then he throws it). I dont think real cigarettes would break that easily but I could be wrong; Im not a smoker.

Tommy doesn't smoke.
Usually drinks and smoke in movies are fake.

He would not have been allowed to buy cigarettes at that age, but he was allowed to smoke them. Kids at my high school (this was from 1984-1988) used to stand on the sidewalk across the street from the school in the morning smoking, since you couldn't smoke on school grounds. Nothing illegal about smoking at that age; you just can't walk into a store and buy the cigarettes for yourself until you are old enough.

Oh, I thought smoking in general was illegal, but that makes sense because if that was the case, over half of my state would be in jail.

I live in toronto and we have REALLY strict smoking laws (basically you cant smoke anywhere but outside, we dont have smoking areas inside buildings anymore, not even restaurants and bars :o ). But in my high school everyone (including teachers) would smoke in the lane way behind my school. I always thought it was weird that the teachers saw students smoking and never said anything to them, i mean its illegal what they are doing. Everyone in the school is under 19 so the teachers know its underage smoking. granted they are not doing it on school property but they are doing during the school hours which makes the school legaly responsable for them.

NO, Tommy does NOT smoke! I read an article where he was quoted as saying the cigarettes used were real, and sometimes it was hard not to inhale. Matt Dillon, on the other hand, really did smoke. Stay Gold, Karen :)

Well, that's good. I hope he didn't inhale too much. :) I figured Matt Dillon smoked, because it looked pretty natural to him. Thanks, guys!

Matt smoke cigars now. He really likes them (especially after a good meal). atleast thats what he said in an article in the cigar magazine when he was on the cover.

yeah, I would have hoped for a choice. it's like he was forced to smoke against his will. But he did it pretty naturally in the movie too. So maybe he had to practice a lot! :D

I am not really sure about Matt Dillon, but does anyone know if Ralph Macchio was really smoking, like Matt, or trying not to inhale, like Tommy? I had already known about Emilio Estevez because my mom told me (she is like, in love with him) and I am really proud of him. Anywho, just figured I'd ask.

Yeah, I read in an interview on The Hitcher that he didn't smoke, but then on The Outsiders commentary he said he didn't remember smoking that much, so I kind of figured that he smoked but wasn't addicted to it. There would've probably been complaints if Ponyboy hadn't smoked in the movie.

You could tell that Matt did, since it looked so real. But I was never sure about Tommy. Then on the commentary for the special edition, Tommy said "I don't remember smoking so much," so I thought he really did smoke for the movie.

They break way to easy unfortuantly. All this talk is making me want a cigarette badly. But not going to give in to temptention Yeah cigarettes are usually fake and drink is watered down but the cigarettes looked very real to me. But if he didn't smoke beforehand it's likely they would have been sick especaily Tommy as Pony smoked a lot in the book I doubt they were though after all Tommy and the rest were just kids. (Says the girl who started at Ten.) LOL

The commentary on the new DVD, I think it's Ralph that says they were smoking unfiltered Camels...so not only were they smoking real ones, but they didn't even have filters, so they were like....extra horrible.

I'm actually kind of surprised Emilio doesn't smoke, I know Charlie and Martin Sheen both do. Patrick Swayze is also quite the chimney (3 pack a day habit I think).

Matt was a 2 pack a day smoker back in the '80s, but since quit in favour of a cigar a day. Cigar Aficionado had an interview with him a few years ago.
