I found this nice little book on Giorgio Pacchioni's website. Besides being a rare historical artefact, it's also useful for learning to play the ocarina - THE ARMY WAY! :)

Written by Clarence J. Shoemaker, the 1940 book "Music is Fun" is aimed at (no pun intended) U.S. Army soldiers. It is a known fact that, during the World War II, U.S. troops were issued Gretsch ocarinas made from Bakelite plastic as a morale booster. This book covers basic music theory, ocarina playing and contains many popular songs.

You can download the whole book in PDF here:

Have fun, learning ocarina the army way!

EDIT: I have mirrored this file on my student website to make it easier to download. You can find it also at the original source, Mr. Pacchioni's website, but you need to sign up to be able to download it.

Awesome! I was thinking the other day that it would be cool to see what was in this book!
Tsukasa, I see them on e-bay here and there.

It loaded for me. It is about 21 MB. It looks like a good instruction method. They explain things very simply and make it easy to learn.

Thanks. This was really helpful and looks like a good way to get started. Sheet music seems easier for me to play then the ones that mark what holes to cover.

I'm glad you find it useful. :D It has all the basic things you need to know about playing the ocarina and it's presented in a very funny way...

And remember: "don't put the mouthpiece too far into your mouth as to hinder free tongue action"
