A glass ocarina?

Hi! It's been a really long time since I've posted here.
So I was wondering, would a glass ocarina work? I assume there would be bit of condensation, but I don't really have any experience with condensation, so I don't know how much that would affect playing. To be honest, I'm mostly wondering because it would look cool, especially if you could put a little LED in there or something... Anyway, I'd love to hear everyone's opinions.

Not many examples of glass ocarinas out there. Glass is not a very easy material to make ocarinas out of. It's hard to mold it into complex yet precise shapes. You basically would have to cut it. There is one example though on the Wikipedia article for the ocarina of an ocarina fashioned out of a glass bottle.

Wow, kind of surprised one of Geoff's ocarinas ended up on Wkipedia. Neat.

Yeah, there can be glass ocarinas, and a couple have been made out of bottles/containers by the same guy from that picture, Geoff Tjakra (EpiCai Ocarinas). However, as slightly touched upon already, there are many limitations to glass. If you make it out of a bottle or something similar, the shape of the vessel may not be optimal for the way the air usually moves (especially if you try to make it into a transverse), so this could affect the intonation and the like. The tone also seems to suffer, likely due to the difficulty of making a window in the glass. Alternatively, if you make it an inverse style and have a sort of mouthpiece aligned to blow over the top of the bottle, this could work well. However, it will still have a very unclear sound, and also appears rather crude (even if it is functional).

If you were to make a glass ocarina by hand, it would require a tremendous amount of skill to craft in terms of making the glass and forming the shape correctly while also adding uniform holes to it and varying the thickness of the walls and so on and so on. That is to say, it would require incredible effort and would really be almost impossible unless there was someone who was simultaneously an ocarina expert and a master glassblower. The price would probably be significant just for the labor alone.

And, of course, there are general problems that make a glass ocarina less desirable. You mentioned condensation, which is completely accurate. Especially if the mouthpiece is also made of glass. Since glass is completely non-porous, spit would get caught in the mouthpiece and obstruct playing after a while. The tone would be uncertain again, perhaps. And obviously it would be very fragile, more so than a clay ocarina. You probably should avoid making the walls too thick for a number of reasons, but otherwise it might be possible that the ocarina could break in one's very hands.

Anyway... this all is simply to say that they CAN exist, and do, or at least have, rarely, but it is unlikely that they ever will be seriously produced and sold (although I do agree that they would look really cool).

I would think that glass would be better suited to making something like a Xun instead of an Ocarina because of the complex wind way of the Ocarina

I agree. It would still probably be exceedingly difficult to tune it properly though.

Tuning is all about the size of the tone holes, so that would be the problem more than anything. It's easy to bore holes in pre-fired clay, and it's easy to choose hole sizes when making a mold for a plastic ocarina. But it would be very difficult to do that with glass (especially if you want it to look professional; it's POSSIBLE that one could very slowly sand down the edges of a tone hole on a glass ocarina, but it would be hard to make it feel or look smooth again).

It is not that hard to drill glass with the right kind of drill bit, but the bits for glass start at about $8.00 each.

A glass ocarina seems to be rather impractical

It's doable, but exceedingly difficult to do so compared to clay (or even wood!).

I would imagine having such a non-porous surface would be problematic. There would be likely condensation issues in the airway.

I think it's possible to make one offs of them, but probably not practical for mass production.
