Well Heck ( Rivet Counters be damned ) I for one will be real happy with the cab's I mean that is ALL anybody need's. But then there is the Radiator shutters and a few other things that a " Modeler " should be able to fix on there own. But ( there is that word ) There are a vast amount of ( Shake the box ) modelers who for the lack of better terminology want EVERYTHING 100% Correct and or demand it.
I mean this is a hobby correct and due to there not being ANYTHING that is 100% correct
Either buy it or be happy with an out of the box incorrect product that we have been dealing with for decades . I have been working on an SD 40 Which is now an SD 40-3.MR I got an Athearn RTR undec kit and figured I would ( shake the box ) & be happy Well guess what sports fans Wrong Hand Rails ,Wrong Trucks ,Wrong Fuel Tank I just got my last bill from Athearn for the last 2 section's of a hand rail set I needed. of coarse I had to buy the whole set AND have 3 separate different sets to get the part's I needed. 2 separate size fuel tank's It came with a 4,000 Gal tank when new But looking at pictures between the real unit in question and what I was trying to get to I had to order a 3,600 gal. tank and a 3,200 gal. tank ALL so I could look at a picture and match the picture with my model part. Real life unit got sold and is now in Wa. State. so no way to measure it
Then it has Dash 2 trucks now not the standard SD 40 truck it was built with. The smaller tank is for the longer side frame that wouldn't fit with a 4,000 gal tank. Real life 12" to the foot Kit Bashing.
I love it and why ?? I know MINE will be correct or as correct as I can make it with Factory parts.
Oh sure I could have just painted it up & said See what I have ?? Nope it wasn't right.
There are a bunch who will tell you this is wrong or that is wrong. There was a guy ( when I was growing up) named Don Something who could look at a model of an airplane that had just won an IPMS modeling prize for best ?? what ever it was and tell you it is wrong ! YOUR DIHEDRAL is 2 1/2 degrees off !! on your wing He never made a model but by God he would tell you what YOU did wrong. .
I had built a WW2 PzKW4 Tank Which I must say came out Great and Don told me I by using the factory kit tracks had 4 extra track sections per side to meany ??? mind you this was late 60s and no hi $$$ parts were being made at that time.
If I would have known All this hate & discontent would have been started over me telling everybody there is a new cab for an ALCO unit I would have kept my mouth shut till I got it mounted & painted.
There is no way I would pay 200 to 300 to get an ALCO switcher that for 28 bucks will due nicely. Besides the 2 choices we have now both run great. No need to re invent the wheel.
And John, I have switched the cabs between Atlas & P2K They can be switched but still wrong.
I did it to see if a Atlas cab ( which could be had at the time) would fit on a P2k unit that no parts were available for any more.
As far as the cab goes the only drawing I have ( and could get ) was an End cab drawing. No side or long hood end could I find or get.
Sorry but that is my 2 cents + a few
And Thank's again Mike.
