I currently have 2 HO New Haven RS-3's painted in the McGinnis scheme. I haven't numbered them yet, and I was wondering what was the lowest numbered RS-3 that received the McGinnis scheme? Did many of the early RS-3's (#517-#536) get the orange/black re-paint? I appreciate any responses!

All the research shows that the early phase DERS-2c units only 521 and 535 had this. Unit 521 IS NOT a good choice for a load of reasons I can not list here as it was unique. So you are stuck with 535 which was later selected for rebuilding.

Anyway here is your photo by J W Swanberg.

OK Wayne,
I addition to the fact I have ZERO photo references of 521, which is unique in itself, could you list at least ONE other unique item about this unit? I mean gosh, it didn't even make the 2-part Shoreliner article or NH Power!!!
meow, meow...hear that? it is I, the cat willing to die of curiousity!!!!

Peter

John,
Silly question, but why do you want info on the Phase Ia RS-3's (NH 517-536), and not the later order of 25 Phase Ib's? I wasn't aware that anyone had made detail parts to convert the typical HO Phase Ib model (Atlas, Athearn, MDC, etc.) into a Phase Ia.
I'm asking 'cause I'd like to know if anyone has made 'em.

Hey Paul,
The reason I was asking about the first batch of RS-3's was because I had exhausted most of the relevent numbers for McGinnis-scheme RS-3's in the 2nd group #537-561. (I've painted 22 of these engines for my own use, in various schemes). I've scanned though about a dozen NH books, searching for RS-3's in their later paint schemes (circa 1957) and I didn't have a lot of info on what I asked about in this thread. I'm not into super detailing these engines; matching the correct paint schemes to their appropriate numbers is fine for me.

Is there an official/unofficial list of the RS-3s that received the PMB treatment ? I am working (SLOWLY) on a modeling article for the Bult. and would like to include this info.
Thanks

Dave B. Contact me off forum. I have that Info.
Peter. 521 suffered damage from a shifted load to the long hood end it was repaired and the only phase 1a unit to receive the split end rails with walk way and duplex MU sockets on both ends. After the unit was painted McGinnis in what appears to be quickie paint job the black started to peel off in huge sheets. By the 1960s all the black was finally stripped off and the original underlying orange and green was revealed. However the Red -Orange cab remained. A truly unique unit.

Wayne,
Thanks for "the rest of the story" certainly unique!
Jim,
Great looking model!
Modelers,
I have submitted a mini-review of the Athearn RS-3 (latest run) to Chris Pey for publication in the Bulletin. If there is interest, I could post a slightly different version on my web site this weekend...let me know.
This is not a "Tech Committee" review, it is my own opinion as a New Haven Modeler, and I do not know if that particular submission will make the Bulletin nor do I know the publication schedule for the Bulletin although usually one comes out shortly after Reunion.
Regards,
Peter
