What are you considering to be a summer movie, though? Because Snow White, for exmaple, is released before summer over there.

The Avengers is considered the first "summer" movie, as the first big release in May always is.

It's been that way for YEARS ;) I think the trend of the 'summer movie season' starting in May started with the first Mummy movie, but I could be mistaken.

It more or less corresponds with the American school year, which goes (in general) from early September to May. So children and teenagers, the sweet-spot demographic for most superhero and sci-fi action movies, are more available.

Anywho:

1. Lawless
2. Prometheus
3. Moonrise Kingdom
4. The Dark Knight Rises
5. Snow White & the Huntsman
6. Dark Shadows
7. The Amazing Spider-Man
8. The Avengers
9. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
10. The Bourne Legacy

1. Take This Waltz
2. Magic Mike
3. Lola Versus
4. Safety Not Guaranteed
5. Your Sister's Sister
6. Seeking A Friend For The End of the World
7. The Amazing Spider-Man
8. God Bless America
9. The Dark Knight Rises
10. Prometheus

I'm interested in The Bourne Legacy due to Renner's hotness even though I haven't seen a trailer.
