While typing a post to Lisa Janey and MrsEl under MrsEl's Love-Hate Relationship with Her Hair thread, I got to wondering about all the different kinds of growers here. Everyone is different and has their own philosophies regarding their own hair; as such, there are no right or wrong answers. Which of the below best describes you?

1.) Grow no matter what and come what may (you never trim and let your ahir decide what it wants to do).

2.) Grow and dust/trim faithfully every 8 weeks with ongoing or at least monthly search & destroy.

3.) Grow no matter what yet trim at least once a year.

4.) Want to grow as much as possible, yet any damage gets trimmed off pronto.

5.) Acheive and maintain a length that balances well with body and height.

6.) Strict schedule such as grow grow grow grow grow trim (grow 5 months and trim, grow 5 months and trim, and so on). Here your schedule might be grow grow trim or grow grow grow trim; you grow for X amount of months and then trim no matter what - you keep to your schedule.

7.) Grow no matter what without trims and then maintain once you reach your hairlength goal.

8.) A combination of 2 or more above (please explain).

9.) Other (please explain).

Thanks for your participation.

I grow about every 10 weeks, then trim faitfully. Primarily because I color when the roots get too big and the bangs get too long, so I get a microtrim at the same time. It's pretty regular.

I recently had to tell him to stop cutting 1/2" to an inch at a time, and go down to 1/4", because I want more length.

Nexxus Therappe shampoo
Nexxus Humectress conditioner
Zerran Negate clarifying treatment (for chlorine)
Zerran Chemical Modifier (after bi-monthly color treatment)
Joico K-pak reconstructor (once every week or so)
jojoba oil as a leave-in
coconut oil treatments (2-4 times a month)
wide-tooth jumbo rake comb (for wet hair)
wooden comb (for dry hair)

I've reverted from a grow grow trim to a growX4months/then trim while I'm trying to acheive some length right now. When I reach my goal of 27" [which will hopefully happen sometime in February during the Ladies Figure Skating portion of the Winter Olympics ], then I plan to #5: Maintain (for a while, at least, and until I convince myself of some good reason to create a new goal and then work toward that.)

one. I haven't cut/trimmed my hair in about 61/2 years now ... I'm growing it out for biblical reasons. I really love my hair, and I'm really enjoying it despite not taking a pair of scissors to it for that many years. Yes ladies you can have nice hair even without cutting it ... as long as you take especially good care of it and don't abuse it. You will not have blunt ends, that's the only difference that I can see between cutting and not cutting ... as long like I said, you don't abuse your hair in any way.

* Just a note, I'm just leaving this picture up for a few days only*

Since discovering Feye's method of self-trimming, I have found myself microtrimming 1/4" about every 6 weeks to keep my ends less scraggley while growing past my personal record into uncharted territory.

I would say I am a 1, 7, and 9! Right now I am in the grow no matter what and come what may. I am in a no trimming phase. Last year I was sort of #7. I was maintaining, trimming off all new growth, but more to even out my ends than to stay at once special length. So I think I am more a #9. I will sometimes grow and grow, while other times trim to maintain, and other times, trim because it needs balance. I find my hair growing style to be one that is ever changing depending on how my hair reacts. If my ends were even and perfect, I'd be a #4. I guess I just go with what my hair tells me... but my hair just doesn't tell me the same thing all the time! LOL! Great post, I'll add it to our Polls listing!

...which number I am.
I have to watch out for my hair very well, because some parts are still damaged from my last perm in october last year.
I am trimming and dusting at least once in a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. It is totaly depending how my hair is improving. Yes, it is very difficult, because the last 3" are permed at least three times.

The last two monthes I went without cones but I feeld, my fragile ends needs some etxtra-protektion. I use the dimethicone-leave in only in this parts and I hope, I dont need to trimm during this month an I can gain some length.
If I would see any split I would prefer to trimm it rather than to let it break off.

I do want to achieve a certain goal length and then maintain it, but at the same time I like to keep it trimmed. The growth is slower that way, but my straight hair doesn't hide dry damaged hair very well and I want it to look as good as it can and still get some growth. I know I have trimmed a good 2 inches or more this year.
I do little micro trims and dustings all the time.

I've been focused on growing, but I have had a few trims. I think it works out to less than once a year though. I do s&d every once in a while though too, but mostly I've been concentrating on growth.

For the moment I am 4.
My hair grows now 6-7 years.
In this time I went through many changes.
I therefore not today to know can, as I over it think in the future.
That is not the reason why I to commit itself would like.
I always develop myself further and my priorities and goals can change with the time.

I have no ultimate goal length except for it to grow as long as it possibly can. But I also want it to be healthy so I do snip splits and other damage when I see it. One the other hand, over the next few years, I'll find a trimming schedule that will help give me the maximum amount of growth possible. Not trimming at all just doesn't work for my hair's growth.

i think i'm a cood combination of both four and five. i'd really like to grow to what looks best on me (i'm thinking waist because i do have a lot of volume and that length will even out the horizontal volume better. however major ammounts of damage (mostly from coloring and stresses) have weakened most of the upper canopy of my hair so that it frays really easily and needs to be trimmed every few months. sigh

I have been growing out for almost 7 years with no trims, my hair is in good shape especially since I have started taking better care of my hair.

#4 and #5. I don't want to trim very much, but I don't want to see anything but healthy ends - so splits! Then my goal is to get to waist, or 32" on me, and maintain at that length until my hemline is straight. After that, who knows!!

Olympia, this was a great idea - thanks for posting the question!

I don't do S & D's, my hair is fine and my eyes are not sharp enough to see the splits, even against a contrasting background. Hey, maybe I don't have any
I don't like "scraggly" ends, but I want my hair to grow, grow, grow so I'm leaning towards #1. Still the idea of not trimming is rather new to me, so I don't know if I can keep away from the scissors.....

lol! I had to read, and then return tonight to reply.

I'm a #4 with a caveat. I don't think I get the ends off quite pronto. I stew for a bit, fret for awhile, hem and haw, then do it.

I picked 5 even though I haven't achieved the balanced length, but that's what I'm working towards. I think 2/3 of my height would be a nice balance.

I picked 4 because I'm kind of a live-in-the-moment type of person. I have a general idea of how often I should trim, but really I let the condition of my hair dictate the trims. For instance, if I say "I'll trim next month" and next month there really isn't much damage, I'll skip it.

I'm also not really focused on a target length. My hair grows so fast (about 1/2 inch a month) that I've learned to enjoy the length I'm in. I came to that realization when I looked back at pictures from a year ago, and thought "wow, I wasn't that length for very long."

I trim when I think I need to, to make sure that most of my ends are blunt and damage free. Usually. Sometimes I think "I'm bored. I feel like trimming my hair." I trim frequently, but not on a schedule.

I'm more about balance with my total "look" than long hair per se. So, once I find my ideal balance, that is the length I'll keep. It must be the artist in me that sees it this way. Of course, my idea of balance and someone else's will probably be way different, but for me, it seems that my hair around waist looks good with my height, body shape, etc. That plus I'm not sure it'll grow too much longer! I do trim, but not on a schedule; just when it needs it.

Fun poll, Olympia!

It's very interesting reading about how everyone is getting from here to there (from one length to another)...it's like being on a trip to a certain destination and seeing the varied routes different people take in order to arrive at the same place. What an adventure!

Some are jetting full speed ahead toward their destination, some are taking the train, others are taking the highway with the least amounts of stops possible, some are taking the scenic route, others are taking the slow boat.

It seems as though people's chosen routes are dependant upon what kind/type of hair they have. So where I'm more like Skeeter and my hair is straight and not terribly thick and I cannot hide any damage easily which makes frequent trims (at least every 3 months) necessary for myself, there are those with thicker hair or different hair type and texture that does very well for several months or years with fewer trims or without without trimming at all and it's full speed ahead for the most part for them.

Also and like Avrilon, I'm into balance and overall look regarding my hair. Again, that's just me and may or may not be right for you. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers, only personal opinions and preferences that vary with each individual...which makes everybody right for themselves and their own unique hair situation. To me, my hair length seems to look best if I divide my body into thirds and get the best hair length for myself in that way. I'm 5'7" tall, and 1/3rd on me is almost at waist and between classic length and knees. Since I know that my hair is not thick enough to carry a length between classic and knees, I'll go with almost waist, which is why my goal is 27" (my waist being at 30"). It's possible after maintaing at that length for a while that I'd then grow a little beyond waist, but I'll see when I get there and, as Fox says, what my hair is telling me at that point. So that's me, but everyone is different and has different reasons and passions for growing her/his hair, has different lengths in mind for themselves and for their own reasons and types of hair. And there's definitely nothing wrong with that - because ultimately we are all captains of our own ship (since peole's religions are all not the same, I'm not going to touch on religion here, so fill in for yourself your own personal "captain") and free to do whatever we want to do regarding our own hair regardless of what anyone else has to say on the matter.

Thanks so much for participating in this poll, and if you haven't read everyone else's responses, please take some time to do so since all the different responses are quite interesting.

Thanks again!

Hugs,
Olympia

I think I'm a combination of 2 and 5. I trim every red date on the MM and I don't think I want to grow indefinitely. Maybe just waist or maybe tail bone. I don't know. I haven't had waist length hair in years and when I had it I did not pay much attention to it at all! It will be a discovery, but in general I don't think that hair beyond waist  will fit with my city girl lifestyle.
