Biotin: A study

Biotin has often been suggested as a supplement to help boost hair growth, but what is biotin?

**Biotin is a water-soluble member of the B-complex family of vitamins. It is also known as Vitamin H. *Biotin helps in the utilization of other B-complex vitamins. You'll need to have a sufficient amount of biotin if you want to have healthy hair and skin. Have you ever seen a scalp condition in babies known as "Cradle Cap"? It's also called "seborrheic dermatitis". This condition is caused by biotin deficiency! You can see how much your scalp can be effected by a lack of biotin! As adults, we rarely have this deficiency, but due to improper diets, it is quite possible. If you are deficient, you may experience, "anemia, depression, hair loss, high blood sugar, inflammation or palor of the skin and mucous membranes, insomnia, loss of appetite, muscular pain, nausea, and soreness of the tongue," this according to James F. Balch, M.D. and Phyllis A Balch, CNC, who wrote Prescription for Nutritonal Healing, Avery Press.

Factors that can contribute to biotin deficiencies can be found in the diets of most people today. "Fats and oils that have been subjected to high heat or exposed to air for any length of time, can inhibit biotin absorption. Antibiotics, sulfa drugs, and saccharin also threaten the availability of biotin." With fast food restaurants serving loads of French Fries, Onion Rings, Fried Chicken, just to name a few, your diet can be overloaded with oils exposed to "high heat". On a diet? Avoiding sugar? If you're supplementing with saccharin, you may be inhibiting your body’s ability to utilize biotin. Body builders who use raw egg whites as a protein source may also find themselves with biotin deficiencies. Egg whites contain a protein called "avidin". When avidin combines with biotin in the intestinal tract, it depletes the body of biotin!

**An additional factor of deficiencies – "two different inherited enzyme disorders, which can be countered by high-dose supplementations (40 to 100 milligrams biotin per day)," according to Omar Alvarado, Thomas J. Fellers and Michael W. Davidson who are with Florida State University. They also add that "pregnant and nursing mothers have been advised to ensure proper addition of biotin (at least 30 micrograms daily) in their diets because the rapidly dividing cells of the developing fetus depletes biotin supplies, and deficiencies may cause birth complications and defects."

Biotin can naturally be found in foods like "brewers yeast, cooked egg yolks, meat, milk, poultry, salt water fish, soybeans and whole grains."

Biotin has been known to stop hair loss in some men at a dose of 100 milligrams daily!

Along with healthy hair and skin, biotin also helps to produce healthy sweat glands, nerve tissue and bone marrow. It can also help to relieve muscle pain, aid is cell growth, as well as fatty acid production, helps to metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins! There are many more benefits to biotin than just being "for hair". So watch your diet, eat healthy, and supplement with biotin as needed. Many find good hair growth results with amounts as low as 3 milligrams, but most use a standard dose of 5 milligrams per day or more.

Something to keep in mind is that B vitamins work best together. When you find you are deficient in one, you are most likely deficient in another. Be sure to take a B-Complex vitamin formula, when taking biotin for best results. Most of the better vitamin formulations do contain B-Complex.
