She was stuck alone again, on the hunts. Vincent just HAD to show off. Now her twin was left at home (a charming little village in the south), with a broken leg, probably bragging that it had happened in some heroic way. As if falling off a roof was 'heroic'. Well, she sure wasn't going to share any gold or glory with him. Not that she was in the job for either. SHE just wanted to protect people from the blood thirsty bastards lurking the crossing. And everywhere else. But the crossing was the best place to start. Why not go big while you were at it? The alchemist scoffed, now that sounded just like something her brother would say.

The town was not quite so different from where she hailed from, not large but not small enough to be dubbed a simply village. Of course here was far more crime here that even Gin was accustomed to. Anyone else perhaps would have had second thoughts, maybe she was getting in over her head? But Gin had made up her mind, she'd made promises and she would see those promises to the end.

Gin adjusted her belt, the little dagger hanging from the side certainly did not make her look any more intimidating. Nor the various potions and pouches belted and pocketed in more places than you'd expect. And she wasn't intimidating, not in combat or in manner. But that's why she paid other people to do that job for her. Such people as the one she was meeting in this small village in Aondir. Just one of those no name places travelers stopped by while on the road. Somewhere with enough people to keep her safe (after all, a girl in her position knew better than to meet strangers alone out in the woods). But not enough where folks would go blabbing her business over drinks with their friends.

The young woman had already met unusual warrior(s) in her pairing up with mercenaries to clean out the local bandit populations, so she would not be much surprised by any others. Even before then, she read plenty of books on the matter, almost as many as she'd read to figure out all the concoctions and such she now carried with her. If you asked her she'd insist that she was more than prepared for the life she now lead. But that was how most young people were, right?

In this small town was a small tavern, and it was here she'd arranged to meet up with another mercenary who'd been recommended to her by a friend of a friend who knew plenty of mercs looking for work. The story was thus, once an appropriate amount of time had passed, she would take a few coins out of her pocket. The idea was to appear as two friends out for a drink. But Gin was a poor actress and could only hope to at least seem to be nothing more than two travelers sharing a journey together. Certainly she gave no indication of being a bandit hunter hiring a mercenary for assistance. Right?

Gin did not drink, though she did purchase a mug of ale so as to not appear any more suspicious. Not that Gin was adverse to drink (she was still young, if not so impressionable as most her age), but she preferred to keep a sober mind about her in cases such as this. As she did not trust the morals of the locals, she also put a little mix into her drink to nullify the effects of any, unacceptable additives.

At any rate, Gin was putting her trust in this friend of hers. So this mercenary ought not be tardy. Because ... how unprofessional would that be!? Regardless of timing, Gin sat at a table, ignoring the dubious look given to her by the bartender who'd glanced up to view the newest arrival into this fine establishment. And with that, Gin waited.

Holiday Trio:
An amazing set of potions, only ever found in threes. They can be consumed or physically applied. Each potion has its own unique effect. Holly Juice - A green potion that can be poisonous if absorbed through the skin. Tracking Device - A red potion that enhances the sense of smell, allowing one to hunt much like a wolf. Mender's Tincture - A blue potion which heals most wounds and minor illnesses.
Poison + Healing Potion + Find Aura

Magik (Jelly) Beanz - A strange confection created completely by accident by an amateur alchemist. Unusual but sweet candies shaped like beans. But just taste like plain ol' sugar. They are surprisingly filling, given their size.

This had been his first chance to get paying work since coming to the island and Tobias did not want to screw up. One did not get a second chance at a first impression. Still, a guildsman had offered to vouch for him and such favors did not come lightly in this community.

It had not been hard to find the designated meeting place; only tavern in town. So, shortly before the designated time, Malick, clad in a simple gray linen shirt and pants, deer-hide coat drapped over his shoulders, entered the tavern. Few noticed him - he simply did not seem that remarkable. So the mercenary made his way to the bar...

As had been arranged, a woman had placed a number of coins on the counter as a signal and the loup-garou took his seat next to her. "Morning, Gin," he greeted her, having been informed of her name by their "mutual friends." He ordered an ale as well, bottom shelf trash that he had no desire of drinking so as to avoid suspicion. He took a sip and cringed; the taste was just...wrong. "You wouldn't happen to have any rancid pork butt to chase the aftertaste, would you?" The question was for Gin but the glare he directed at the barkeep, predatory yellow eyes boring into the cheap man.

Turning to his would-be employer, Malick spoke again. "I'm Tobias Malick," he finally intoduced himself. "So, you have a project I can help with?" He had been told some of what was expected of him, and while he did carry a weapon, he was also farely gifted in hand-to-hand combat. He hoped he was good enough to make his mark on the mercenary community. Every career had to start somewhere...[R4E]Tobi has a sword, now[/R4E]

The story was written and the actors playing their parts. She could only hope things went according to plan. Thus far she almost choked on her drink, grimy and watery as it was. Gin would not be surprised if it were but one part grog to twenty parts dirty dish water. Even the horse trough outside was better quality than the stale yet still greasy brew she'd taken. It was scarcely enough to barely be called a sip, and yet the taste lingered and the disgust was palatable. She could swear it was stuck in her teeth, to knock loose up and be chewed upon later. Ugh.

Not at all late and just in time, a man sat beside her before one of the locals could grab the open chair. A cursory glance was all her study of the figure for now. She would have to trust in the people skills of others (her guildsman friend) that they would choose one suitable to the task.

Surprising the urge to shudder, Virginia rose her mug just so and gave a little tilt of the head. That was far as greeting went, and then it was straight to business. "It would be of little improvement." She ignored the barkeep, if he was offended then he only had himself to blame. Him and his dirty fingers, pocketing as much coin as he could get away with rather than providing true services.

Then again, this was Aondir. No one ever went Velkyn and its neighboring vistas, looking to be an honorable citizen. (Barring, of course, folks like herself seeking to clear out the riffraff through any means necessary. But they were an often short-lived rarity). "Ahem. Yes. I am delving into the surrounding hills in search of a certain subspecies of weeds often hidden amongst the foliage. And thus require escort and guardianship from the local wildlife."

Tobias cocked an eyebrow at the bandit hunter. It seemed his own vague subtlety had been well founded. The swashbuckler well knew what his job was, and a glance over his shoulder could let him pick out anyone paying too-close attention. Nothing so far...

"Well," he began, raising his cup of swill. Then, thinking better of it, he put the cup down. He had no intention of finishing the flavorless drink. "Weed collecting sounds like an expensive hobby." While he did not sound like he was exaggerating his voice but he was still loud enough for anyone specifically listening to hear. Hopefully she was intentionally using herself as bait and he wasn't missing his mark.

Adjusting his sword, Tobias leaned part way out of his seat. "If you would rather not finish that-" He put more emphasis on the last three words for the barkeep's sake before continuing. "I'd suggest heading out sooner rather than later. The scary critters usually come out at night." Virginia would have a better clue about where to spring their trap, and if this was the trap...well, all the better to step outside and watch for their spy.

She kept an eye on him, making sure his expressions indicated he got the hint. Anyone playing along with it and really believing it was mere botanical work. Well, it was obviously not the one she wanted for the job and would have needed to find a way to ditch. However, he seemed to get it. So she trusted her known allies to match her up with the correct ... well employee she'd guess she'd say. Gin didn't consider anyone a 'partner', that was her brother's status.

"Most extracurriculars are." Running out of things to say (and not being a particularly talkative sort to begin with), no further words were given. She was not about to consume that dirty dish water any further, and did not even bother to push it aside. Before she could proclaim the hour growing late, and the need to avoid nightfall traveling, the other fellow brought it up first. To this she merely nodded.

Standing, she adjusted the knife at her belt before turning to the door. "Yes." And then she headed for it, stepping past the occasional drunk of serving maid as she made for the exit. The sooner out of here the better, and she did not stop until well out of the tavern and down the street. Where she would pause should her new traveling companion have gotten left behind.

If not, they were headed for the city gate. Or what passed for it in this dingy town.

Tobias was able to keep pace with the smaller woman. In fact, he kept an eye over his shoulder to keep track of any pursuers. Best to avoid any unwanted surprises. He did manage to be subtle about it. After all, bait only worked when the prey did not know it was walking into a trap.

The bounty hunter had taken not of the town's defenses: simple wooden palisade, swinging gate to be pushed closed at night, raised platforms for archery nests. Good for talentless ruffians but not near enough if a real threat attacked. This said that either they rarely had to fight off anything more sophisticated than a bear, or there was some vague deal in place between these folks and the bandits in the area.

Or maybe these people didn't have anything worth stealing. That was an option.

The pair passed through the gate once more, heading of into the wilds. The advantage of being followed away from civilization: anything human could be tracked with the tremendous easy. So unless their follower could shift into the form of a woodland critter, his clumsy clomping would make him very easy to keep track of. In fact, any humans in the area would have trouble launching an ambush.

Why of course the town had made a deal with the latest bandit gang to pass through. On threat of death, naturally. Pay off the bandits, bandits will only mess with the town folk a little. It was a common practice in this particular northern territory. They paid for what the brigands dubbed 'protection', but really it was just to keep too many deaths from being placed upon the citizenry. That clan of ne'er-do-wells however, were not the ones she was to be hunting this eve. Oh sure, she'd make certain to return later (probably when she could afford more mercenaries to assist her) and take care of them. First thing first though, had to get THIS job done. And Gin was never one to leave a job unfinished.

Passing the gate and upon exiting the town, she reached into a pocket of her coat. A palate cleanser was necessary after that terrible ale in the tavern. Besides it being her usual habit, finding a couple of dried berries by rifling through a small pouch reserved for the purpose. Since there was no need for conversation right at this moment she determined it was not impolite to have a lite snack amongst present company. Silently but nonchalantly chewing from the side of of the mouth not facing her ah, assistant ... employee? Whatever title he deemed himself. Thankfully this dispersed the greasy fell leftover from the ale, by the time the city gates were many yards behind them.

It was not until they were out of view and ear shot of the shady crossbowmen guarding the gate, that the bandit hunter would deem it necessary to speak again. "Ahem." She adjusted her spectacles. "We shall be leaving the roadside in approximately fifteen to twenty minutes. Then we will go off road, the herbs I seek are rouge in color and quite hardy. However they only grow in separated clumps spread enough distance from each other that it shall take some time traveling back and forth between them." Now, rouge was a strange color for one to describe a plant, instead of simple calling them red. But Gin would think herself quite clever to come up with the code word.
