I suppose some might feel that this box set ought to be the occasion for a major in-depth career overview feature.

I think we're going to be disappointed on that score.

I didn't think there was anything wrong with it either.

Anticipating the middle class lionisation of football and descent into huge money and corruption, that began in the late 80s?

For the record, I think the review is fine, from Simpo's point of view. I do think the trend of shrinking reviews down to micro-blurts which exist as a tiny text pedestal for 5 coloured stars is a little depressing, but there you go.

Oh, I see--that fits with the other stuff people say. I try to ignore it as much as possible, all that soccer talk makes my brain hurt...I hate this song.

The song is often seen as commenting on trends in football which would lead to the middle-class takeover of the sport, greed etc.

Have you ever read the MES interview in football fans' magazine When Saturday Comes?
http://www.wsc.co.uk/the-archive/100-Fa ... rk-e-smith

Although, when he says:
When I started supporting them in 1965, they were bottom of the Second Division.
He's wrong. Manchester City ended the 1963-4 season in 6th place. They were 11th (mid-table) at the end of 1964-5. They were top at the end of 1965-6.

I don't see that they were bottom at any point during 1965: https://www.11v11.com/teams/manchester- ... gueTables/

and
Did you collect things like football stickers?

Yes, I had the 1970 Mexico World Cup set. The Romanians had been photographed in black and white then coloured in. You’d open a packet and it would be one of the east Europeans and you’d scream. And then when the World Cup came around, half of them weren’t even in the squad. The pictures were all from about 1962.
We can check this: http://amsugarworldcup.blogspot.co.uk/2 ... exico.html

Here's the Romanian team:

Rare 5/5 star review in next month's MOJO, by Ian Harrison.

"THE FALL
*****

A- SIDES 1978 - 2016

Fifty-one singles played by loads of different line-ups; yet under the iron
rule of counterblast-caudillo Mark E Smith it's all one, bringing primal/avant-rock
rumble and caustic paranormal disquisitions. Get the seven-disc version for the
flipsides".

Well, by horrible twist, the box is indeed "complete". There will be no more singles. This is indeed all of them, coupled with a wildly impressive pick of their flipsides on the 7CD box.

What a wonderful item to have at a time like this.

I like the separation of the As and Bs. It really works when you binge-listen, which is how I’ve always listened to The Fall, even when he hadn’t died.

I also like the fact there’s no scholarly, or otherwise, essay in it.

To be honest, when Steve Hammonds and I decided upon Masquerade b/w the PWL mix for the RSD 7", it was with the thought that the 2 tracks were already on the 7CD box set (and we could have even changed the name to 1978-2017).
The Fall online = The Fall A-Z. Every century... past, present and future. No re-writing the past; no obliterating it.

Keeping the vocalist away from fiddling with our knobs since 1998! Hup!

We could have got Daryl Easlea to do an essay for the box, but Steve decided to go with my extended discography only and let the music talk for itself. And the discography took more pages than originally allowed for anyway!

From a quick glance, not completely accurate.

BTW, to do a complete A & B sides would have run the box to about 10 or 11 CDs, which Cherry Red was not prepared to do for commercial reasons.

I wasn't having a dig, it's just helpful to know the gaps, what's out there to search down. Should you feel willing to make the appropriate corrections, it would be much appreciated.

edit: or anyone else, for that matter.

I'm calling "Masquerade" a special edition reissue then. 😇

A few weeks ago, I was trainspottery enough to make an attempt. And yeah, it definitely looks like another 3-4 CDs worth. It can't have been easy making the cut, but I can see the rationale behind it.

So this is my Reckoning:

The Box Set contains all single & EP tracks (treating Slates as an LP and The Remainderer as an EP), EXCEPT: Peel Session tracks, download-only singles, the 7” with The Frenz Experiment, U.S. 80s-90s from the What's That Noise split EP, the 2 Librans demo 7", the Blind Man demo CD, Higgle-Dy Piggle-Dy from the Monks split single, and the following (66?) b-sides:
No Bulbs 3,  Slang King 2
Sleep Debt Snatches, Mark’ll Sink Us,
Hit The North Parts 3-6, Australians in Europe, Northerns in Europ,
Guest Informant, Twister,
Big New Prinz, Wrong Place Right Time no. 2,
Kurious Oranj (live), Hit The North (live),
Telephone Thing (extended), Telephone Dub,
Zandra, Arms Control Poseur, Black Monk Theme pt II,
Zagreb, The Funeral Mix, Life Just Bounces,
Don’t Take the Pizza,
Return, Dangerous,
The Knight The Devil and Death, Free Ranger,

M5, Cab Driver, Happy Holiday, Behind the Counter (remix),

Birthday Song (new mix), The REAL Life of Crying Marshal, Tom Raggazzi (new mix),
Susan vs Youthclub (remix),
(Birtwistle’s) Girl in Shop, Recovery Kit 2#,
Portugal,
Where’s the Fuckin Taxi? Cunt, My Ex Classmates’ Kids [Mix 4]
I Can Hear the Grass Grow (slow version), Bo Doodak,
My Door Is Never (rough mix), Reformation! (edit),
Strangetown (live),
Mister Rode, Rememberance R, Say Mama/Race With The Devil, Touchy Pad
