Many gems here are better than the band's album tracks.

I've gone for the Loneliness of the Middle Distance Runner. It beat, by a short head, the whole of the Dog On Wheels ep and Put the Book Back On the Shelf.

I think B@S are going to release a CD of Radio sessions from this period soon.

Oh yes, the good old days. A lot of great songs, however things often get a bit spotty when Stuart Murdoch hands over the songwriting or singing duties to other members, even more than on the regular albums. I haven't followed Isobel Campbell's solo career intensively, but leaving B&S seems to have done her good. On this compilation her vocals mostly sound quite annoying to me.

I still like many of these songs a whole lot, but overall the early studio albums have stood the test of time a bit better IMO.

String Bean Jean for me. A great lyric with a fantastic guitar line.

Most of it is great though.

State...

Where is the hidden track on the CD?

On the vinyl of the third EP it's unlisted on side 2.

listening to this today..... god does this take me back to my later year drives commuting to college. chills and standing hairs all morning long.

i always liked their EPs/Singles more than the LPs. short vignettes of greatness.

I went String Bean Jean, though Lazy Painter Jane, Slow Graffiti, & The State That I Am In are a close second.
