What would you like the next Fall Cup to be?

Total votes: 42
4(10%)
9(21%)
8(19%)
8(19%)
4(10%)
9(21%)

So - possibly foolishly - I have agreed to run the next Fall Cup.

The topic has generated quite a bit of discussion already, so I thought a poll might be in order.

Think of this as enlightened despotism rather than true democracy, though: if it's close, I'll go with my own decision; but if there's a runaway winner I'll go with that.

This is also the first time I've done a poll, so I hope it works

I think everything released in the 90's - Extricate to The Marshall Suite with all B-sides, EP tracks etc. Plenty of quality material and a lot of difference of opinion.

Alphabetical because it would throw up up some novel juxtapositions and God, we need that.

All officially released live tracks - it would be interesting to think we were voting for the performance as much as the composition.

Interesting suggestion, but I have to admit that would stretch me a bit organisationally, as I'm not much of an aficionado of the live stuff. In fact I've never actually owned a Fall live album :ohdear:

I can see that would be a problem. Of course, the only real answer here is "whichever you fancy running" :applaud:

Shhh! I'm trying to maintain a veneer of democracy here!

Actually, I can foresee an issue with the 'opening tracks' idea, i.e. one winning too easily <_<

I would like to see a Cup of studio tracks from mostly-live albums released in the 1990s, please and thanks.

Also, although an ideal number of LPs (32 if you include Seminal Live), the project would be over in no time.

We need a larger amount of entries, b-sides including extra tracks on CDs etc would be ideal.

At the risk of being accused of having an agenda, I like this, too. I had proposed the PBL to AYAYM run as a similar way of capturing this period . . . it gets less focus and the "usual suspect" songs that are prone to be Final Four contenders for these Cups come from the periods before and after it. I suspect that if you looked at Cup results of the various times we've done full career run reviews, many/most of the songs from this era get wiped out by the likes of "The Classical" and "Winter" and "Blindness" and "Garden" and so on. So, yeah, there's an argument that this in an inferior period, perhaps, but I'd still like to dig into it to see which songs emerge from it as the faves in a Cup setting.

I would enjoy this one . . . but didn't the Curio Cup capture/cover the B-sides?

Great Idea Steve .I think Rainmasters point about longetivity and Deus point about something slightly different .Means the PBL to AYAMW will and can give both.. :)

A 90s cup appeals to me a bit more than the seemingly (to me anyway) arbitrary "Middle Fall" idea to be honest.

I am quite attracted by the randomness of the "alphabet" idea as well.

I'll let the poll/comments run on for a bit longer though.

Would you do all 500+ songs, or just pick an assortment for each letter?

I have a vague idea how I might do it, but I need to have a think. I also need to look at previous ones to see how they were run.

But we've done all 500+ songs just recently, minus SLT I think.

I have a vague idea how I might do it, but I need to have a think. I also need to look at previous ones to see how they were run.
If you go that route, when you frame the Cup, I would be interested in your (or anybody else's) sense of what we learn or gain by spending many weeks establishing that our favorite Fall song beginning with "B" (say) is "Blindness" (say).

I feel that the lenses that we have applied in prior Cups give some interesting or enhanced perspective into certain aspects of the Fall experience for us as aficionados, critics and fans that are anchored in some temporal (e.g. YZN era) or thematic (e.g. Curios/Rarities) real world way actually related to the music . . . but I don't feel like "Fall Songs That Start With B (say)" really MEANS anything in any way related to the music or the musicians.

Again . . . I will vote and yammer and argue and shout "NOOOEEEEL!" with the best of them in whatever Cup you put out there, with thanks for the effort it takes to run one of these . . . but I just don't feel that ABC results will really say or mean anything with such a non-music related filter for deciding what we vote on, and how it gets clustered.
