A half-decent list.

Both debuts from The Smiths and The Bad Seeds worth a mention.

However, It'll End In Tears gets my vote. Still a great listen to these ears. B)

Any of the three (Independent) albums Black Flag put out in 1984 beat this entire lot. Not to mention all the other brilliant albums that came out that year, none of which are here. Who picked these? :D

I agree the mid 80s was a great time for independent music and labels
but this is what Joe Public was buying and putting to the top of the Indie Charts. -_-

I don't doubt that, but all that list shows me is that Joe Public was one gloomy fuck...

Toss up between Badseeds and Rockabilly Psychosis. Nick won the toss.
Hatful of Hollow is wayyyyyy better than The Smiths debut.
Hurrah for Mix It Up.

Really?
I'm surprised that the 23 Skidoo album sold so well - I'd pick it from the list.
What a jolly bunch we were in 1984, no wonder I really did wear black all the time.

I can understand the Smiths nostalgia thing I guess, but it's truly disheartening to discover that so many Fall fans love acts like This Mortal Coil. :(

If I had to pick anything it would be the Nick Cave, but I never listen to it anymore.

Good point. That's an even higher level of pretentiousness.

It's pretentious wimpy music that takes itself too seriously. And I associate that kind of tripe with clinically depressed lonely young goth gurls. No offense, to each his own. :P

New Model Army's Vengeance was in the indie charts for a ridiculous amount of time...and for a seething, spitting, nihilistic rant at Thatcher's Britain there is no parallel....but by that time the old punks had become lefty liberals, life's not fair Smiths fans or spent all the time spiking their hair in the mirror and puking in the bog.

Stuart Morrow's bass playing on this album is extraordinary and there are few albums around where the bass guitar is the lead guitar.

The problem with the album is the absolute shit production which no amount of remastering seems to be able to repair. How much of this was down to Mond Cowie of the Angelic Upstarts is anyone's guess. The only way to do the songs justice would be to collect up all the storming live versions in existence and release that.

.....oh, the 23 Skiddoo one is good too.
