COOPER CITY
Two suspected car burglars were shot by a Broward sheriff's deputy early this morning after they tried to run him over while fleeing, authorities
said.
A third suspect was injured after being caught by a police dog, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Veda Coleman-Wright.
The shooting happened near the intersection of Southwest 118th Avenue and 47th Court in Cooper City shortly before 3 a.m., when an off-duty deputy who was
home asleep was woken up by his barking dog and spotted two men and a woman trying to break into a car, Coleman-Wright said.
The deputy called for backup units, and deputies had the three surrounded when the suspects drove at a K-9 deputy while trying to flee, Coleman-Wright said.
The K-9 deputy opened fire, striking the woman and one of the men.
The two men was taken to Memorial West, while the woman was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.
Coleman-Wright said their injuries were not life-threatening.
The woman was the sister of one of the men, Coleman-Wright said.
Investigators were at the scene examining a white car stuck in a hedge that is thought to be the suspects' car.
The deputy, whose identity was not released, was placed on administrative leave while the shooting was being investigated.
The identities of the suspects were not available, Coleman-Wright said.
Authorities have been on a heightened state of alert in the neighborhood because it's had a rash of car burglaries recently, she said.
Several burglarized vehicles were found in the area after the shooting, Coleman-Wright said.
