NYPD To Begin Random Steroid Testing On Officers

April 09, 2008

The NYPD is set to begin random steroid testing for its officers this summer.

Under the program, any officer who fails a test would face suspension and possible dismissal.

The NYPD is waiting until the summer to begin the testing so that it has time to come up with the $1 million in funding the program is expected to cost the
department each year.

The decision to test comes in the wake of a scandal in which at least 27 officers were linked to a Brooklyn pharmacy which allegedly supplied them with
steroids. Seven officers failed steroid tests and are currently on desk duty while they await departmental charges.

State narcotics officers seized more than $7 million worth of steroids and human growth hormone from Lowens pharmacy in October.

The owner of the pharmacy, John Rossi, committed suicide in January.
