Deptford Officer Welcomed Home After CrashDEPTFORD, N.J. (CBS 3) ― Hundreds
gathered in Gloucester County to welcome home an area police officer seriously injured in a car accident.
Supporters cheered on 24-year-old Deptford Police Officer Gary Wurst, who suffered a brain injury after a crash on Delsea Drive on December 26.
Wurst fell into a coma following the accident and underwent months of therapy at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital.
But Friday he was back on his feet and saluting his colleagues. Wurst received a heartfelt welcome home outside the Deptford police headquarters. Hundreds of
school children were present for the emotional event.
"It's great to be home, it feels really really good to have my family here and everybody supporting me," Gary said.
Despite his long road to recovery, Gary has not lost his sense of humor.
"I'm going to eat some chocolate chip cookies and I think I'll have a Miller Lite," Gary said.
Wurst is expected to continue his recovery at his newly remodeled home. The home is equipped with a wheelchair accessible ramp to the front door and handles to
help him maneuver small steps.
Gary's family is ecstatic to finally have him home.
"It's a big day for him, and a big day for the whole family, it's just so great to have him back," Gary's mom Barbara said.
While this is a new beginning for Gary, there is still hard work ahead. He will go to outpatient rehabilitation for six hours a day, five days a week at least
for right now.
"It's so I can walk and drive and live a normal life again," Gary explained.
Gary's ultimate goal is to one day have duties with the Deptford police department.
"Like volunteer to help them work on computers, install stuff at station, just to help out," Gary said.
