We've been playing tag with turkeys since the middle of last week. For the most part things have been pretty quiet although Dayna's calling just about closed the deal on one a couple days ago. Last night was the first opportunity for my new caregiver, Molly. We ate an early supper and slipped into the woods. The excitement level rose on the way to the stand when a not too distant gobble got most of our attention!

She got the decoy quickly in position and we started some very subtle calling. It wasn't long before we realized we had two different gobblers approaching at the same time! At one point their gobbling started to move away so I had her do a few excited cuts. That changed the whole ballgame and things intensified a great deal when a third gobbler sounded off! With three excited long beards on the way in, there were no more quiet moments. I was pretty sure at one point there was a gap in the gobbles when I thought I could hear Molly's heart racing!

One of the birds was very interested in the decoy but really didn't want to take the last few steps for perfect 20 yard shot. Unfortunately for him, he did cross the 35 yard line so I gave a sip on the trigger the moment the bead settled on his head. He crumpled at the shot and Molly jumped out of the shooting house and ran through the briars in front of my shack, instantly forgetting about the trail. smile emoticon On her way out the door I said, "make sure to get a handle on the turkey immediately so he doesn't get away! " Molly wasn't about to grab that big bird by his feet so you can probably imagine the picture of her with her flip-flops standing on his neck…

Never a dull moment around here! Our turkey had two beards, 6 and 8 1/2 inches. His spurs were 1 inch and 1 1/8 inches. I debated about posting this video because of the low quality cell phone but the audio gives you an idea what we were in the middle of. Once again, I sure enjoy turkey hunting and I think Molly loves her new job!

Thanks guys. I've got a bonus tag for the middle of the month so I'm hoping to have some more fun in the woods this spring.

Congratulations, Kenny! That sure was a skinny turkey. Maybe he just ran all those pounds into the ground. :D
