I spent a couple of weeks in Sydney catching up with family for Christmas and New Year.  I bought a new hat and a new watch specially for the trip.  I'll show the photos as soon as I finish sorting them.  Meanwhile, anybody want to make a guess as to the type of watch and hat I bought?

(No prizes for this.  I'm still broke after the trip)

I'm guessing you got a VCM and a straw hat

Here are some clues:

- I was staying by the beach

- I wanted a single watch for all occasions

Also, can you guess why I got another straw hat and how it differs from my Akubra straw?

You may recall I was making some enquiries on this forum a couple of months ago.

As for the hat, can you guess why it was that I decided not to take my big old Akubra straw?

I think you might have been on the road when we were talking about what I was looking for in a holiday watch, specifically the size.

Here's one last clue (and it's a dead giveaway):

The watch is of course a Seiko SKX023 (thanks Ed!)

The Submarineresque style and sensible size make it suitable for almost any occasion, and it's watertight.  The screwdown crown is probably the fiddliest that I've ever encountered, but it keeps good enough time that it didn't need much adjustment in the two weeks that I was wearing it.  The bracelet took about two minutes to resize.  It's a comfortable watch to wear for weeks on end.  Day-of-the-week is Spanish or English.  Normally I'd choose the non-English option, but on this holiday I found I actually needed to be remined which day it is.  Without a doubt, this 'holdiay watch' is a great success and money well spent.

The hat is made by Camillo, Ecuador, exclusively for the Original Panama Hat Company, Australia.  I don't know the model name, but it's like a heavy-duty version of their 'Havana Trilby'.

It's a perfect holiday hat; lightweight yet with a very durable weave, with a brim small enough to wear on an aeroplane but still offering useful sun protection.  In its stock condition, the brim is turned up all the way around.  I got the chap in the shop to turn the front down.  He warned that the tightness of the weave would tent to pull it up.  He was right, but with a bit more work at home, I got it set exactly where I wanted it, and there it has stayed.  The puggaree is another customization.  The original thin grosgrain band is hidden underneath.

No doubt I will post more photos of both hat and watch as time allows.
