Usually when there is a massive die-off in a tank and there are no visible ill-effects on the fish, its not from a disease...its because of a contaminent entering the system. It might not be something dropped into the tank, it might be a not fishtank safe decoration put in the tank. My dad's friend killed a ton of fish by placing a metal baseball into the tank. the glossy gold paint, as well as the metal itself, leached into the water and killed all of the fish in his 38 gallon tank. some common contaminents include:
-Soap of any kind
-Floor Varnish fumes
-Paint
-Chlorine
-Cleaners
-Finished or painted metal
-Painted items
-SOME plastics
-Rust
-Oil
-Anything caustic
-Anything acidic

If anyone has anything to add, please do :)

Also remember if you have any exterminators and what not over, cover the tank!

its anything that, if it gets into the tank, can kill the fish.
as long as you watch what goes into the tank, you're safe. :)
welcome, btw ;)

Cleaning the outside of your tank with glass cleaner that contains ammonia is a big no no.The ammonia can leach through the glass raising your ammonia level.

Magnet floaters are good too. You can just move it from the outside and the other half in the tank cleans it inside and the exterior one shines the glass.

BUMP to add
sponges with anti mildew and fungal additives. many people scrape algae with sponges, so make sure you read the label.
