By bichir I'm assuming you mean a senegal??? In that case I think they could get along in a 55.

Again, depends on what species you want to have. I have an ornate currently in a 110gal tank, he is 15" and is a big boy but I do not want to have to cycle this tank again that's why he is in there by himself. I think a 60gal *LONG* would be fine for any polypterus as a juvenile. What you feed them and what size they grow to is then up to you to house them appropriately. I have seen many bichirs that have grown more than 20" and are now housed in indoor tropical pools. I'm not sure if they are compatible you would have to take a risk on that and help yourself by making sure they are the same size or the bichir would probably eat the ropefish.

hmmm if you're happy doing 50% wc a week...then when it grows it out..you'll have major problems...what if you miss out a week? the bigger the tank the better imo.

In that case they'll be fine in a 55g, or perhaps even a 40 gallon breeder. And I believe there is only one species of ropefish. :)

Good luck, and be sure to post pics of them when you get them!
