Skaven Runic Script?

Hi, unlike the Beastmen and Dwarf scripts, there does not seem to be any key in the army book to show how each character of Skaven script is supposed to be pronounced or what it means. Is there another source on this?

Cheers,

clicky. It's a website on some of the skaven runes, I think based on older edition fluff. It's originally in french (I got the google-translated version in the link), so some words might not translate well. Clan Bit is Mors, Clan Grin is Rictus, Mallepierre is warpstone, Skarogne is Skavenblight, etc. Some might be easier to mentally translate, like prophete (Grey Seer) and Verminarque (Verminlord). Unfortunately we have no source for a proper alphabet.

Do you mean "translation"? (That isn't giving me a whole lot of confidence, Morm. :P j/k)

BTW, I was in the eastern townships of Quebec this afternoon. It's really beautiful there! Why have you been keeping the beaty of Quebec a secret from us!? ^_^

Sorry to go a bit off-topic, but since we're on the topic: Mormeguil, do you happen to know why Skavenblight is called Skarogne in French? I've always wondered, and if it's a random name or some combination of words like Skavenblight is.

@scrivener: Thanks! I can read French, so it should be no problem. I picked up a 5th edition Skaven army book today, but no luck, hence the question. Which edition do you think that the link might be based on?

[edit]Hmm, it seems to be a translation of a presumably English text by Bob Lippman, partially based on 5th edition - interesting.

I dug up a .doc file in English through a search via Google and Warseer:

[/edit]

@RT: I haven't been to the Eastern Townships for a while, but must revisit!

Cheers,

I've located the original source (note, word document), you're right Ratgor, it isn't official (IIRC there isn't any official alphabet), but allegedly based off 5th edition. I believe Bob Lippman gave meaning to the symbols in context to how they appeared in the armybook, that's why he's got those page references there.

Unfortunately, the only extra material in that word document, the actual alphabet, has broken links :(.

Well I don't really know about Skarogne but it looks like it want to be similar to the word "charogne" wich is the name of a decompositating dead animal. Just took out the "ch" and replace with "Ska" probably for skaven. Most have been the best souding way of finding something at least related a bit to "blight" not that good but thats the only explanation I see.

Yeah your right it's actually translation but I ALWAYS get that one wrong. Honest, don't know why but I just can't seem to get it right. Probably because "traduction" sound english to me. Don't know why.

Well to me it's not particularly beautiful. It just is where I live so it's nothing special to me. Also, I never liked countryside and thats the part most people like. Anyway, glad you liked it but don't come and practice bicyle in my city...way too many hills.

-35degrees. That's why.

Oh and I'm pretty sure the name doesn't mean anything. It seems to me GW invest new names when they can't really translate it. Boneripper = Vorhax is a good example.

Or, as Mormequil said, Skaven+charogne. But it's a bit far-fetched.

Oh yeah, and I'm with him again on "traduction". Took me a long while too to get it right whitout flipping a coin.

Screenshot or it didn't happen!

Going a bit off-topic again, but does this random name replacement thing make things confusing for those who don't use english as their first language? And also, I think you lose original meaning if word-names get replaced like this. Skavenblight is called thus because of the meaning of the word 'blight', and also because it's in the Blighted Marshes. Calling it Skarogne (though admittedly a very cool name) makes it just a regular city name. Would it make a different impact if it was called "Skavenrouille" or something?

Likewise I noticed they kept the original names of Rictus and Mors. Rictus means the same thing in french (since english probably borrowed it from french), so nothing lost there, but Mors seems to mean something different in french. It translates to "bit", is this the past tense of "bite" or as in "a little bit"? Which is still different, because Mors is based on latin for "death", IIRC.
