How do *you* tie your neckties?

I've always, always, used the Windsor knot. I like the symmetry.

What, people still wear these? Are you going to ask about billycock sizes and plus fours also?
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Half-windsor, but I'm pretty good at making it balanced. My dad always did full windsors, and that's what I learned in high school. But as soon as I got out of college I switched. I wear a tie once every year or so now, but can still tie them in my sleep.

Four-In-Hand

8 years in grammar school
4 years in high school
29 years in the office

Not so much anymore.

If I were alone on a desert island with one tie and 20 years, I could never come up with all those variations.
I have always tied my tie one way: simple and easy. The length is always perfect first try, unless of course I'm running late, in which it takes about 3 attempts. (kinda like how hitting all the red lights is inversely proportional to how early/late you are)

Edit to add: I think people notice how a tie is tied, about as much as they notice shoelaces.

4 in hand when I am in a hurry, half windsor when I am not.

I figured you would go with clip on.

I always find the asymmetry of some of these knots off-putting.

Which is why I liked the Windsors.

I only acquire hand-made real ties, no clip-on.

Hmmm... I think I've been doing 4-in-hands all these years. But I'd have to break out a tie and tie it to confirm.

Me too. What I thought was a half windsor was a 4 in hand, and my full windsor was a half...

The problem with a full windsor is it takes too much tie, so you end up with a very short tie.

Plus, it makes you look ancient like George.

I do a half-Windsor. I think I'm pretty good at evening it up.

To get the length right, I have to buy extra long ties.

Simple. It's the only one I can remember. And I only need it once or twice per year.

Wait a second, after looking at Copper's graphic, my standard knot is also a 4-in-hand.

Same here. Hated the look of a crooked knot. Half Windsor FTW.

Learn one knot and stay with it. I once did my 4 in hand while driving with my knee on the steering wheel. Never heard anyone comment one way or another on a knot.

Ties are definitely less common these days, Aqua’s comment struck me that they could nearly disappear. I think shoes are trying to replace the tie as the accessory.

If you work in white collar jobs with customer contact, ties are still pretty much standard, no?
