I smoked 10 pound of leg quarters, the wife baked some fresh sweet taters and opened up a couple jars of green beans from this year's garden. Toss in an iron skillet of yeast rolls and that was supper for four adults and two children, plus meat left over.

The $2.99? That's what the leg quarters cost....

What does the canning (well, jarring) process do to the beans?   Do they taste or feel different than fresh?   Or does that depend on how you prepare them?

10 pounds of leg quarters for $2.99? Sounds insanely cheap.

Nothing is the same as fresh. Canning fresh green beans from the garden does make a superior product as compared to commercially canned, though.

Some things can be canned or frozen, depending on preference. Peas, butterbeans, corn and mustard greens we freeze. Tomatoes, squash, soup base and peaches we can.

Canning does have the advantage of lasting for three or four years, while most frozen stuff won't. Plus, canning saves space in my freezers.

I'm a cheap guy and they were on sale, so I bought 40 pounds. I do tend to shop loss leaders and have been known to grind my own hamburger or sausage if I find certain cuts cheap enough.

But 30 cents for a pound of meat? How is it even possible to produce the meat at that price point? How much does a farmer get for a chicken?

I've seen leg quarters on sale 2.99 Euro per kg, and that is already ridiculously cheap. But 30 cents per pound is 20% of that.
