There has been a sharp rise in the number of children under 11 referred for mental health treatment by schools in the last four years, figures show.

Data obtained by children's charity the NSPCC shows that schools in England have made a total of 123,713 referrals for specialist help since 2014-15.

But more than half of these came from primary schools. The youngest child referred for help was three years old.

The government says its reforms will transform services for children.

The figures were released under Freedom of Information laws to the NSPCC by 53 of the 66 health trusts known to provide mental health support to children.

Issues children were referred for included depression and anxiety, sometimes these were so severe that it can lead them to the brink of suicide, said Esther Rantzen founder and president of NSPCC's Childline.

:'(

This is just incomprehensible to me. How is it that under-11s, who are in a period of their lives which they should be enjoying, are being depressed and being driven to the point of suicide? That just seems desperately wrong to me :( .

Walk out side, watch the news, see what happening around us, that should be enough

Social media... there's your most likely problem right there. Might not be the number one culprit but, it has already plagued the minds of children in recent years.

Well, I do hope 11-year-olds aren't on social media.

Or, if they are, I hope they're at least on safe places like Club Penguin (or whatever they're on now, since that shut down!)

Sadly, I don't find this surprising. Far too much pressure is put on the youth of today. They're being put on pedestals and given expectations that are too high for them.

So there's that.

Unfortunately this doesn't surprise me in the least. It's horrible to know that a three year old needs mental health help. They are brand new and shouldn't have issues at such a crucial developmental stage in their life. I don't believe that social media is the main culprit, although it does play a huge part in it. There are many reasons why this is happening and it could be caused by not having a good support system with their parents (children need their parents and if they do not have that nurturing at any time in their childhood then they are a good candidate for depression and anxiety), bullying, traumatic events, etc. The list goes on. The best we can do is be happy that they are getting the help that they need. Believe it or not, starting early with mental health treatment is actually a good idea because then the issues have a very low chance of affecting them in their adult years.

tl;dr: It's a shame but it's life. Lots of people need mental health treatment these days and not everyone gets it.
