'pon the ruin'd moon of Hyllas, spake the legionary Pallas,
"Cast thou hence from in the shadows, lest I smite thee duly, or-
speak thy name if Thorne or craven." 'pon which from its darkened haven
Stepped a grim and tattered raven wand'ring from the Nightly shore
"Tell me what thy wretched name is 'mongst this pale and icy hoar.”
Quoth the raven "Nevermore."

Absolutely some kind of tech savage

It's building on the idea that Space Marine chapters never really fight alone. They're perpetually surrounded by countless unnamed and unremembered humans (like the Spartan helots no-one remembers were at Thermopylae). Some of these will be chapter-affiliated serfs, others will be devoted pilgrims and zealots. Yet others will be scavengers and loiterers flocking round the Chapter for safety, picking over the battlefields like crows.

These guys are the lattermost. A flock of ravens loitering on the fringes of the Wolves' fleet, picking over the bones of battlefields swept clear by the Wolves. However, their presence is tolerated as their scavenger's curiosity and constant cawing chatter between their ships provides the Wolves with much information about their surroundings.

I've got a couple of key things I want to work into their background: 1. Odin's ravens acting as spies and intelligence gathering, 2. the Danish folklore around 'Valravn', and 3. Edgar Allen Poe's poem The Raven

Lord knows how I'll do that with only 200 words, but I'll give it a try!

"We spy thine ships by moonfall's aft, thy manifold and blackened craft
Loiter round the Rout like stormclouds, scavengers like crows of yore.
Chatter caw and bicker hasten. Ears and eyes and spies and graven-
ones the Wolves do brand 'Valravn', we have spied thine ilk before.
By what hubris think thine arms might stand afore the might of Thorne?
Speak no more of 'nevermore'."

Thanks man I must admit they're really fun to make

The raven's head did tilt and twist and quizzically it viewed him hence
Yet Pallas stayed his mighty blade, confusion gripping soul and more
"Wherefore art thou masters brave then? Tombstones 'pon which names engraven."
Yet unflinching stood it's brazen gaze that burnt through armoured core
"Hydra's heads shall reign supreme from dust to dust and Throne to Thorne."
Quoth the raven 'Nevermore."

Lovely integration of bionics, gasmasks and feathers, they're ramshackle but unified. And who doesn't love a little 40k-ified Poe?

"Quoth the Raven---'Eversor.'"

A little more serious though for sure. Good stuff!

What was that about serious?

I'm pretty much done modelling too these guys are so fun to make I've ended up making rather more than I'd planned...

I've still got 2 or 3 more ideas I want to try out so I might end up with 10 or so models. That'd give me the opportunity to cherry-pick the best group of 5 (with the option for having the others loitering in the background if that's not cheating...). When I've finished painting maybe you guys can give me a hand picking out which ones you like best

Actually, on the topic of painting I could probably do with a hand at that. I'm pretty confident when it comes to my bone/tan/red/brown stock and store, but all of these cool colours and blacks/blues/greens I'm basically shooting in the dark. I've got a rough idea of how I want them to look. Pallid white skin (confident at that) as contrast to varied darker greens, blacks, blues and browns for the cloth. I've been experimenting around with stuff, but if anyone's got any techniques they like that work well for making stuff around the darker end of the spectrum look varied then I'm all ears

Oh, and I've finished my poem glad someone likes it! Turns out poetry's tricky but pretty fun to do (even if you are cribbing heavily from someone else) side effects include your inner monologue sounding off if it's not in 8-beat rhyming couplets...

It also flows a lot better when it's all together, and is easier to pick out the narrative.

'pon the ruin'd moon of Hyllas, spake the legionary Pallas,
"Cast thou hence from in the shadows, lest I smite thee duly, or-
speak thy name if Thorne or craven.", 'pon which from its darkened haven
Stepped a grim and tattered raven wand'ring from the Nightly shore
"Tell me what thy wretched name is 'midst this pale and icy hoar”
Quoth the raven "Nevermore."

Speak no more of 'nevermore'."

Within Pallas rose an ire as a raging inner fire
Impudence of wretch's tongue like insults flung hast brought it fore.
Sadly rage obscured unshaven brutes within said Nightly haven
Hydra's blood ran through the cave in ruddy pools along the floor.
Thence the skull of Pallas stands resplendent 'bove the raven's door.
Thorne supreme reigns nevermore.
