Koto Okubo, the oldest woman in Japan and the world died today, January 12th, at age 115 years, 19 days. The obituary mentions that she'd been ill with pnemonia since the end of last year.

Presumably Misawo Okawa is now the oldest woman in the world but I can't find any articles confirming her survival as of yet.

Rip.. I am afraid we'll never get to see a picture of her

January has been pretty tough so far with al those big names dying :-(

The three oldest women all passing away within such a short time frame. How disappointing...

Hopefully Kimura can recover/has recovered. Our only remaining 115 year old and 1897 survivor

RIP Mrs. Koto Okubo.

What a tragedy! I suspect that in 2013 1897 and 1898 is dying out.
And in the worst case we have at the end of 2014 nobody from 1899.
(Only validated cases.) I hope deeply I´m not right.

They probably reported Koto Okubo's death very quickly and they didn't want to prematurely determine who was their oldest living woman without verifying their existence. We'll probably get information on Japan's oldest living woman soon.

Rest in Peace Mrs Okubo.

Half an hour ago on Japan Economics News

http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXNASDG1 ... 0C1CC1000/

大久保さんの死去で、国内最高齢の女性は大阪市東住吉区の大川ミサヲさん(114)になった。男女を通じて世界最高齢は京都府京丹後市の木村次郎右衛門さん(115)。

After Okubo's passing, the oldest living woman in the country is Higashisumiyoshi Area, Osaka's Misawo Okawa (114). Oldest living person in the world is Kyotango City, Kyoto prefecture's 115-year-old Jiroemon Kimura (115).

Guess this is a confirmation that Misawo Okawa is still alive.

R.I.P Mrs. Okubo

Jiroemon Kimura is now the last surviving person born in 1897; It's not often this title goes to a man!

Very sad news, on only 1.5 months time we lost the 1896, and 2/3 of 1897. Rest In Peace

Rest in peace Mrs. Okubo! It's sad that probably we won't know anything else about her life or see a picture of her.
