Greetings,

The Johanna Booysen case is the most enigmatic of the 1960s WOP titleholders.

We know very little about her:

-Born Johanna Marie Drotskie
-Married a man with the surname Joubert
-After his death, she remarried to a man with the surname Booysen.

But can anyone find news coverage or photos?

I'm not asking for a rechecking, but for details on this case...the oldest South African ever.

It appears that she and her first husband (Josua Andries Joubert) spent a few months in a refugee camp in 1901 during the Second Boer War; her age was recorded as 37 in the camp's records. It doesn't qualify as an early-life record, but it's something.

According to this site, Guinness misspelled her last name as "Booyson" in the record book. The spelling "Booysen" is supported by the camp record and by her headstone:

Frustratingly, I can't figure out the name of her second husband...

(aaaand it looks like you're already aware of this information, based on your recent post in the 10 Oldest People per year 1960-1969 thread)

According to this site, her name was in fact Johanna Maria Booysen, but Guinness misspelled it as "Marie". This is supported by the camp record and by her headstone:

I had found her gravestone already.

Guinness listed her as "Johanna Booyson", misspelling her surname.

Here's a mention from 1982:

"The oldest South African, about whom there are no doubts, was Mrs Johanna Booysen, born 17 January 1857, who died at Belfast, Transvaal on 16 June 1968."

Mrs. Johanna Booyson of Belfast, Transvaal, was estimated to have 600 living descendants in South Africa in January, 1968.
