If You See an Inappropriate Post

Tama-Zoners,

As you may have noticed, there is an epidemic of SPAM-bots running all over the internet posting garbage posts on great message boards such as this one.

These are posts by a user who has never posted before, the are always off-topic, ALWAYS full of links, and frequently those links are to inappropriate sites. By the way, NEVER click one of those links, as they most likely will infect your computer with malware and spyware.

Most of you are good at spotting them and alerting a staff member, but sometimes I see people replying to these posts and not alerting the staff. What we want to do is delete them as quickly as possible, and sometimes finding them all is time-consuming, especially if somebody has replied to a spambot post so it's not the newest one in a topic.

What is wonderfully hepful to those of us on staff is if you jot a quick private message to one of us when you see one of these posts. We'll take care of it ASAP. Don't bother replying to them. They are not made by people who will read your replies, they are automatically generated. Plus, you may see them before the staff does, and it saves time.

Check if a staff member is ONLINE if they are PM that staff member FIRST.

Thanks!!

Yes, but if we ignore them and do not tell someone like cyann, and they don't see it, then well, that's SPAM floating around Tama-Zone.
Can I just re-iterate what cyann says !

IGNORE THEM, DO NOT POST and then report it.

A member of staff will always look at 'view new posts' when they log in. If we see a new post with a members name that we don't recognise (usually totally non-tama related) and no replies, then it's easy to check it.

If one member or more has replied- we will see 'their' name as the last poster and sometimes think that as it's a member we recognise it's okay.

If you don't post, and ignore it and report the post to a member of staff who is on-line at the time (their name will be at the bottom of the board in color) it's much easier for us to get rid of it.

We are not in the habit of letting SPAM stay on the board. All TamaZone staff are pretty competent at spotting and removing it, and keeping this site safe and clean for you.

All forums get this sort of unwanted posts, some forums are not so organized in cleaning up, and it is remarkable that our staff are vigilant enough to keep the board constantly clean so that you can all enjoy it without having to come across this sort of thing too often.

But yes I will kepp an eye out for the posts...
Yes they are spam bots.

They are NOT out to target TZ or any other tamagotchi forum in particular- they are global, and post thousands of posts on any forums.

see this article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forum_spam

their main intention is (quoting from that article)
Most spambot forum spam consists of links, with the dual goals of increasing search engine visibility in highly competitive areas such as weightloss, pharmaceuticals, gambling, pornography, real estate or loans, and generating more traffic for these commercial websites. Some of these links contain code to track the spambot's identity if a sale goes through, when the spammer behind the spambot works on commission.
So in most cases it isn't about spreading viruses, it's about getting commision from getting you to click on their links.
WHICH YOU SHOULDN'T DO!

That's not the kind of advertising meant at all. People are allowed to link to their own sites, and appropriate sites, in their sigs, and if you report everyone linking to an online game or other board in their sig, you're going to swamp the staff with totally unnecessary PMs.

Making posts to advertise is what is not allowed, and this topic in particular is talking about spam that's similiar to the kind of spam people get in email, that is often advertising things completely inappropriate for this board.

The posts being discussed here are mostly things that look like email spam. Often they don't make sense, usually they have inappropriate content, and they pretty much always have lots of links.
For the most part these posts aren't posted by real people. They're made by programs meant to spam in order for someone to make money, just like email spam. Telling the 'members' who post these things not to do it won't have any effect, because there's not actually anyone there. And the people who run spam bots don't care about whether accounts are banned. The bots just will make more accounts on more message boards, and continue to spam.

Thanks, the topic has already been taken care of.
But a quick reminder to everyone about what the first post of this topic says to do when you see somrthing like that:

Thank you,

It is really unusual to find that sort of post in the middle of a 'games' topic. It's kind of worrying.

We can easily find 'new topics', but 'new posts' that have been topped by regular members are a lot harder to spot. Staff don't usually have time to check every single post of every single topic in 'games'.

It's now been taken care of.

Please can all members refresh themselves with the first post of this topic.

We've had a Spam-bot problem for a long time (as do all forums) but newer members may not realize what to do.
