at the request of Ilaria, here's the tut for this wall

Images (from oxoniensis and dean_sam)

Dean

Mary 1

Mary 2

Textures (from salt and burn texture1, belladonna texture 2, crossing shadows texture 3, Reflection texture 4

texture 1

texture 2

texture 3

texture 4

Open a canvas (mine was 1366x768) and fill it black.

Add the three main images and resize them all to 550px in height. I placed the Dean one to the left, the first Mary one to the right and had the second Mary picture in the middle. I then used a texture brush to erase the hard edges/watermarks. It looked like this

Then I added the textures. I desaturated texture 1, set it to lighten 50% and masked out the edges so only the top arch remained. Texture 2 and placed it in the bottom corner just under Mary. I desaturated that layer and set it to lighten 25%. Then I added the third texture. I duplicated and flipped it horizontally and placed one on either side of Dean and Mary, set both layers to lighten 50% and then masked out the parts covering the images. At the moment it looks like this.

I then added the fourth texture. I flipped the layer vertically, resized that layer to 1400px so it fitted the whole of the wallpaper, desaturated it and set it to lighten 25%, then I masked out the parts covering the images. Then I merged the layers together. It now looks like this.

Next I went to colour-auto-white bal to brighten the image. It brightened it up but then it also emphasised the graininess of the images so to smooth it out I duplicated the layer and then went to filter-blur-selective Gaussian blur and set it to blur radius 10. Max delta 25. I then set that layer to normal 75% and merged the layers together again.

The colouring I used I got from a tut from here. I didn’t use the entire tut only the last bit with the channel mixer, step 8

RED: 110, -25, 0
GREEN: -5, 40, 60
BLUE: -50, 80, 60

I then duplicated that layer and set it to soft light.

Finally I added the text using century schoolbook and multu, in the colour #497982. All the layers are set to addition.

Awesome tut! Here's what I did:

I played around a bit with the gaussian blur and instead of setting the duplicated Channel Mixer layer to Soft Light, I set it to Screen around 40%.

Here's my attempt. After playing around with things a bit, I decided that I didn't like the effect of the Gaussian Blur so I left it out. Also I played around with the colors on the channel mixer, since I didn't particularly like the cyan tint it gave my images. Added a couple of brushes to my background to enhance the textural feel of the image. Not really sure if I like the overall effect, but this is an interesting technique.

Also I edited my background a second time adding a texture by Hideous Beauty, behind Dean & Crowley since I didn't like the way things looked in the original. Here's my second version of this background.

Here is mine. It came out terrible lol of course it wasn't until I was adding the text that I realized this was a gimp tutorial and I was using photoshop *facepalm*
