Ask the Weyrling Master

This cavern is deep below the surface of the earth, technically beneath rather than within the great mesa housing Plateau Weyr, its sands heated by geothermal emanations from even further down. This place is accessible to humans only by a series of winding tunnels; it's rather a long walk, so the Candidate Barracks are in a smaller cavern off the main Hatching Grounds so they don't have to travel far when a Hatching begins. There is a gaping hole in the roof of the cavern large enough for many dragons to fly through at once; this is actually the mouth of a huge limestone cave system which, though somewhat dangerous to fly through, is quite navigable by air. Sometime before recorded history, someone discovered that part of this network came very close to the outer rock 'skin' of the gigantic plateau in which it is contained and broke through it, thus creating an entrance from the outside for dragons. Many younger, smaller dragons in particular enjoy the acrobatic flight through this tunnel to reach the Hatching Grounds and its draconic spectator perches, but tragedies happen occasionally when foolish riders attempt to accompany their beasts instead of walking like everyone else and end up being bashed against a stalactite or falling off in the unpredictable environment; it's nothing at all like flying Thread and obstacles are everywhere. Once you are actually in the great cavern which houses the Hatching Sands, however, there is plenty of room. There are two small caverns situated off the Hatching Grounds. One is the Candidate Barracks and the other is a Queen's Weyr designed to be occupied temporarily by whichever female and her rider are currently guarding a clutch.

K'xon settled down next to his king. He suspected most of the questions would be things he, weyrbred, already knew. The Stands impressees, though? They hadn't been properly prepared. When A'hara asked about pursuing crafts during weyrlinghood he shook his head slightly.

He'd already seen how ragged the weyrlings were run. There wasn't time for hobbies for the first six months, let alone crafting. The boy wasn't going to answer for the weyrling master, though. And the questions he had were personal to him and Cepth and best asked after the lesson.

Well, stuff they'd probably need to work out themselves, but advice would be welcome. Cepth rested his head in his rider's lap and crooned slightly, reassuringly.

Villanara smiled at Argent and took the seat offered her with only the slightest hesitation and prompting from Cereceth. Then they were starting and her eyes went wide as she realized she didn't have a clue what was being said and they weren't close enough to hear the Weyrling Master. Cereceth, happily curled on her perch between Hinmoroth's horns, quickly stepped in, repeating the Weyrling Master's words verbatim. She smiled thankfully to her dragon.

Villanara had been trying to form her question in her mind, put together exactly what she wanted to to say, when suddenly everything got LOUDER.. It was like the ever-present buzz of the dragons was amplified by a thousand and the pressure of it broke her wall her completely without any warning. The voices that flooded her mind were all jumbled together but, those closest to her stood out. Her hands came up to cover her ears, as if that could block them. She there were so many and all at once...

No..not now.. why can't I.. She didn't realize she was broadcasting her thoughts to all those she was connected to. She was trying to snap her defenses back into place, but this was something she'd never experienced before. Part of her realized it wasn't just dragons she was hearing.. but.. everything. Every living thing with thought. She was hearing thoughts that were meant to be private. Something had amplified her Hear All Talent....

Cereceth tried to reach out to her, but being the most closely tied to her, her voice was the loudest and it only caused her pain. She bit hard on her lip until it drew blood. The pain from the wound seemed to trigger something as just as suddenly as the noise in her head started, it died back down to just dragons and her desperate attempts to put her defenses back up finally took hold, leaving her mind quiet again.

She didn't realize that there were tears streaming down her face until she felt a cold breeze brush against them. She only realized that breeze was generated by Cereceth leaping past Argent to settle worriedly across her shoulders. The little dragon nudged her rider's chin and licked a tear from her cheek.

Slowly, very slowly, she came back to herself. She didn't dare look around to meet the eyes of the people she'd just been so intimately connected to. How many of them noticed? She trembled, partly from the migraine caused by the noise and partly from the fear of what her classmates would think. She only comprehended a few of their thoughts, but she knew more and more of the episode would return to her. It had been like that when she'd first arrived at the Weyr too. The dragons were so overwhelming in such close proximity that she only actually caught a couple conversations through the pain at once, but she remembered the ones that were in her peripheral consciousness later.

She took a deep, trembling breath, trying to calm her racing hear and pull words back together before addressing one that had bothered. She looked at Benihimeth, daring for a moment to let herself reach out. The link was tentative and her voice small as she asked a different question than she'd originally intended. Is it true that weyrlinghood runs you so ragged you can't even find time for hobbies?

R'shar looked at C'rihon then sighed as he realized that he was settling in to listen he had no questions about being a dragonrider. It was obvious, you have no life outside your dragon so really there was no point in asking other questions. "Yeah I have one why is it so hard to be a crafter and a rider? Because clearly dragons eventually become independent otherwise adult riders would be too ragged to breath." He asked as he looked at C'rihon his tone showing some respect but also a lot of dislike.

Piezoeth looked at the hear all and crooned gently, she fell silent the moment the woman's head started hurting more. When R'shar felt her touching his mind he thought of a blank and empty field he didn't want her to know anything about how he felt about Piezoeth. He didn't need anyone to know how he really felt, for the moment he stared at her and waited for her to leave his mind. The moment she was gone he looked back to Piezoeth and sent his love and respect, he even rested a hand on her head. She nuzzled him gently, knowing that he'd been afraid that anyone would know his care for her.

Jiskomia groaned and grumbled to herself as she slowly climbed out of bed and got dressed, all the while being pestered by her new dragon who seemed to think that this lesson would be a very exciting one. After getting up and grabbing a quick bite to eat, the two of them made their way to where the rest of the weyrlings were gathering around the Weyrling Master. She placed a hand on Jokamith’s neck as she looked around, not entirely sure where she should go, eventually she decided it would be best if they just sat close enough to C’rihon that she wouldn’t be hidden behind some of the bigger weyrlings. Jokamith sat beside her, but kept fidgeting, he didn’t want to talk, he wanted to get up and explore! ”I have a question, are we still allowed to explore?” Jiskomia was pretty sure that most, if not all, of the Weyr had heard about what her and her brother had gotten themselves into before she impressed Jokamith, and had a pretty good feeling she knew what the answer to that question would be.

Yu’fen was up, dressed, fed and ready to go in a relatively short amount of time, he couldn’t say the same for his dragon however. Nymosith was still sleeping, at least, he was doing his best to pretend to sleep. ”I know you’re awake, come on, we have a lesssson to go to.” Yu couldn’t help but being a little irritated at Nymosith, who was now slowly stretching himself out. Alright, no need to get huffy, Im coming. Nymosith didn’t really, but more like stalked, after Yu’fen as the ferali made his way out to where the other weyrlings were gathering, and while they were definitely not the first, they were not the last. Yu’fen and Nymosith sat near the back of the group, the copperhead ferali hoping not to gain too much attention while his officer napped next to him.

Xikania wasn’t exactly a morning person, but she was rather excited for their first lesson. Come on Izarth, you have to be there but you don’t have to talk or socialize alright?” While she would have preferred Izarth be more social, she was just happy that the scrappy little dragon had picked her. Once Xi finished getting dressed, she escorted her young soldier out to where the others were, waving happily to the other weyrlings as she approached. She bowed respectively to the Weyrling master and his dragon, Izarth just ignored everyone as she stayed close to her rider’s side. The young soldier still didn’t understand why she had to be here, but since she was already out, there was no point in going back to her and her rider’s room.

Larythana brushed out her long, light brown hair and quickly got dressed for her first lesson with Anith. ”Are you ready Anith? It’s time for our first lesson! I wonder what the subject will be.” Ary smiled and picked up her tiny little scout and made her way to where the others had gathered for the lesson. Ary smiled and set Anith down carefully before turning to the other candidates and waving. The two bowed respectfully to the Weyrling master and his dragon before turning to the rest of the group and finding a place to sit and waiting for the lesson to begin.
