A New Adventure

For Fishcrafters and any other scenes which might take place far out to sea. An unusual mating flight perhaps, or activities by amphibious (not necessarily half-amphibian) Ferali?

Vidian stared at Jiskomia. Her rant wasn't so different from the lectures his mother sometimes gave, though she more often started at him with tears in her eyes and whiskers trembling. She had lost a child once and the fear that she would lose another sometimes overwhelmed her. Jiskomia, on the others, hand knew the need to explore. She should have understood. Still, he understood because he felt the same anxiety when she'd had to make the food run. He did what he'd always done when his mother was upset at one of his adventures. He put his arms around her and held her in a hug until she was ready to calm down.

Once he was sure she was okay, he pulled away and offered her the paper and charcoal again. She needed to sign it at the very least, because her mother would be just as worried. He knew she didn't trust the firelizards not to give them away, but Dia was smart enough. She could do it.

Jiskomia froze once she felt Vidian’s arms around her, and slowly her mind started to calm. She started to relax and hugged him back before looking at him very seriously. ”Alright, I’m ok now. I was just really scared you would get caught, and I hope you know what you’re doing with this.” She was still rather nervous about sending this letter to their parents, she didn’t want either of them to find out where they were, or where they were headed and then sending a dragon out to drag them off of the ship whether or not they wanted to go. But she relented and signed the paper as best she could, there was only one way to find out what would happen. ”There, no going back now.” Jiskomia put on her bravest smile and handed back the paper and charcoal.

Vidian smiled at her, a reassurance that they were okay and they would be okay. He looked around for a string to tie the note with. Coming up with twine that held some small packet of food closed at one point, he tied the note to Dia's leg. He impressed upon the queen the importance of keeping their location and destination a secret and then gave her an image of Vidian's mother. Dia winked between leaving a puff of cold air behind.

That was done. Now they could rest easier knowing that their parents at least knew they were okay. Vidian had been so worried about calming her that he complete forgot to tell her about what his firelizard had done until he felt the meat shifting in his pockets. He pulled a piece out and offered it to Jiskomia. Then he reluctantly showed her an image of one of the sailors walking through him. She needed to know that one of the firelizards could do this, but he also didn't want her to be worried that he'd almost gotten caught.

Jiskomia took a deep breath and let it out slowly, attempting to calm her nerves as Vidian sent his queen firelizard off to find one of their parents, most likely his own mother, with the letter. She sat down on the floor of the boat with her legs crossed as her mind wandered to her own mother. She wondered if she was stilling looking for her, or if she had already given up on ever finding her daughter? Jiskomia hugged her legs to her chest as she tried to will the thoughts from her mind. Thankfully it seemed that Vidian had come to her rescue as he offered her a piece of meat that she thanked him for and chewed, grateful for the distraction, until she saw the picture that he sent her. You mean, someone actually walked THROUGH you?! How is that possible? Not to mention that you were almost caught!! She was curious, frightened, excited, and worried all at once, she was also rather confused because she didn’t know how to feel, not to mention her mind was now racing with all of the possibilities this just created.

Vidian had been trying to construct a response to her when Dia returned, the response tied to her leg. He took it from her and shook his head. He wasn't falling for his mother's request. She would take them home and they would never a get an opportunity like this again. Focusing on Dia and demanded to know the precautions she'd taken when returning. He'd given her instructions, but he had to be sure she'd followed them. She showed herself leaping about various points over Pern before returning to him. There was no way she was followed.

She preened happily when he gave her a piece of the jerky and moved off to eat it away from the eyes of her jealous bond-net. Meanwhile, Vidian passed the note to Jiskomia to read.

'I'm relieved to hear that, but I'd still like to come see you. Where are you right now?'

Love, Mother

When she'd finished reading it, he nodded at shimmer and the mohark set to work destroying the letter and reshaping the wood into a rose, complete with wooden stem. When she was finished, she nudged Jiskomia's hand, encouraging her to keep it.

It was impossible to tell how long they had been on the ship when they finally heard the shouts above them declaring the approach of land and the pounding of feet. Had they finally made it to the southern continent? Vidian breathed in sharply as he looked at Jiskomia. He'd been woken from sleep by the sudden noise above. He looked to shimmer and showed her an image of himself peering out a hole in the side of the ship.

Shimmer hopped up and formed a ledge higher up in their hiding place, making narrow steps leading to it. The she separated the wood to make a hole. Vidian hadn't asked for the platform, but when he climbed the stairs and looked out the hole, he realized if she hadn't made it, water would have come pouring in the hole.

He grinned looking out. They were positioned just right to see the approach a green and brown strip of land. He didn't realize it would be another hour before the anchor was set. When the hour did close and he could see the land more clearly, he practically bouncing with excitement. By this point, Shimmer had already made Jiskomia her own hole and platform, not that it was a huge difference. Vidian was too excited to keep from sending the images to her. He kept up a constant feed of what he was seeing. There were so many trees! That meant a lot of places to explore. It was bigger than he had thought and there weren't proper docks like there were on the Northern Continent so the ship had to anchor and take smaller boats to shore.

That could be a problem. He bit his lip, looking at Shimmer. Shimmer shook her self out and looked to Sapphire for help. Before either could move, Lilac stepped between Jiskomia and Vidian, perching on his platform. Vidian's eyes grew wide and he fed her an image of her shifting from a human to a firelizard. He didn't need to send the image, though, because she would be seeing the same thing happening to him.

With an appreciative trill, Shimmer made their peep holes big enough for them to fly out of. Most of Vidian's winger critters let out excited noises and flew past them to get into the open air. They'd been cooped up far too long. Vidian, silent as ever, sent an image of them in their new forms flying to land. He was careful to keep he concern that Lilac might not be able to undo this to himself. Surely she could, or she wouldn't have done it... With his intent made known, he hopped out the hole and promptly plummeted into the water. Flailing his wings, he panicked for a moment before Dia and Lilac dove down and helped him from the water, lifting him to a point where he could catch a drift of warmer air to give him a lift towards land. Two more firelizards were posed, ready to help Jiskomia into the air after seeing Vidian's spectacular fail at flying.

Jiskomia jumped a little when Vidian’s firelizard Dia popped out of Between with a response tied to her leg. She bit her lip as she waited for her turn to read the letter and hmphed at what Vidian’s mother said. She smiled at the pretty rose that Vidian’s Mohark turned the letter into and hugged Vidian. ”Thanks Vidian, it’s pretty.” Still smiling, she carefully tucked the rose into her pack for safe keeping.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jiskomia’s eyes widened in a mixture of surprise and excitement, and even a little worry, when they heard all the shouting, they had finally found land, and that meant that her and Vidian were finally going to get off this ship! She watched as Vidian’s Mohark Shimmer made him a platform and a peephole to look through and Jiskomia watched curiously as Vidian climbed up and looked out. ”What do you see?! Did we make it?!” She couldn’t help the excited little squeak that accompanied her words. She smiled happily and excitedly climbed up onto her own platform and looked out her own peephole as soon as Shimmer had made it. ”Thanks Shimmer!” She gasped in surprise as she looked out at the land and all of the water that surrounded them. She gulped a little as her active imagination started to run away with her mind, making her think of all the things that might be swimming in that water right at that moment that might just be hungry enough to eat them all up without a second glance. She tightly closed her eyes and shook her head to rid herself of those thoughts. Vidian’s images helped and relaxed her a little as she returned her gaze back to the land that was just begging to be explored!
Sapphire snorted indignantly when Lilac acted before she was given the chance too, but there was no stopping the stubborn Mohark once she set her mind to helping her person and her person’s friend. Jiskomia’s eyes grew wide in shock as she watched as Vidian was transformed into a firelizard, and watched in a mixture of shock and worry as Vidian jumped out of the peephole and immediately started falling into the water. ”Vidian!!” She wasn’t thinking that her scared shout would possibly attract the attention of the other people on the ship; she was just worried about what happened to her friend! She sighed and let her head hang in exasperation as two of Vidian’s bond-net helped him out of the water. She lifted her head and watched until he was well on his way to land, which meant that it was her turn to jump. She looked back and flapped her newly formed wings experimentally before turning back to the peephole and mentally pushing herself out. She flailed at first, but just before she hit the water she got control of her new appendages and started to slowly, so very slowly, lift away from the water and into the air. She gave an excited squeak and lifted her head to look up and towards the land, mentally running through all she would have to do in order to make it there without drowning herself. ”Wing up, wing down, wing up, wing down.” she kept repeating the same words, over and over as she slowly flew herself towards land. Jiskomia sighed loudly when she finally made it to shore, and let herself collapse in a tired pile on the warm sand.
Vidian flashed an image of the treeline to Jiskomia as soon as she landed. Not just yet. They couldn't rest just yet because if whatever talent had been used to change them to firelizards wore off and they were in sight of everyone, the adults would keep them from exploring and figure out a way to contact their parents.
By the time they had made shore, Vidian had gotten the hang of flying and was now making his way steadily into the the trees. They just needed to be out of sight. That was all. He landed on a tree a little ways into the jungle and waited for Jiskomia to join him. Excitement thrilled through him, making it impossible to sit still. He shuffled from one clawed foot to the other, anxious to begin the true exploration of this continent.
As much as Jiskomia wanted to just lay for a while on the warm sand, she knew Vidian was right, and forced herself to follow him into the trees. She could tell he was anxious to begin exploring, but she had a nagging feeling that the two of them would need to find somewhere safe to set up some type of base camp, just so that they would always have some place to go back to if they ever got separated. She did her best to let Vidian know what she thought, still not quite used to this new body not.
