Name: Rochelle Ayers
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Grade: 12th
School: Cochise High School
Hobbies and Interests: Gaming, Literature

Appearance: While Rochelle only gives the basic attention to her appearance, she's still easy to spot in the halls. She's African-American and rather flat-chested and long-limbed, in fact it wouldn't be incorrect to call her lanky. She weighs 140, and has always leaned toward being thin. Her skin tone is brown, and it seems to glow due to her healthy diet. Her auburn hair is natural and unprocessed, giving it a thick and wavy texture and appearance, and it's length adds a few inches to her 5'7" height. Sometimes she will style it in a fauxhawk just for variety, but for the most part it's a curly, poofy cloud on top of her head.

Facially, she has rather thick eyebrows that she rarely gets shaped, and her eyes are amber. They are very bright, but she also has heavy bags under them due to lack of sleep. Her nose is small, but her lips are on the thicker side, and she has a slight gap between her two front teeth. Acne hasn't been a problem, so she takes advantage of it and eschews makeup altogether, though she is rather fond of flavored lip-balms.

Her wardrobe is nothing too special, consisting mostly of t-shirts with various video game references and denim. Occasionally she'll wear a tank top if it's hot enough, but these choices are made with her comfort in mind. She is rather fond of color though, and her shoes show that, she owns only a few neutral-colored pairs with the rest ranging from pastel to neon. A blue dragonscale dice bag is always hanging off her belt, containing a set of seven gaming dice. In addition, she wears a red rubberband around her wrist daily.

Biography: Rochelle Ayers was born to Tanya and Abram Ayers on New Year's Day. They weren't the richest couple, but he owned a clinic, so Rochelle grew up comfortably enough in a small house in the suburbs of Kingman. She was a playful girl, but preferred games to sports. It started out as just board games, then her dad bought her a refurbished Sega Genesis and the rest was history. She was obsessed, but her dad was indulgent and her mother was distracted by her own regrets. Abram was an older man, and Tanya felt stifled by having started a family so young. She began staying away from their home more often, and Rochelle was not too involved in her games.

Her elementary days were not too notable. She was pretty average as a student, so the teachers didn't take a special interest in her. Her dad was hard at work at the clinic a lot of the time, and her mother worked part-time to stay home and take care of her during the evening. Tanya was dutiful, and was never abusive, but she wasn't very loving either. It seemed like spending time with her daughter was like some kind of chore, just like cooking or cleaning. Rochelle didn't know why, but she got the feeling that she just didn't feel like being there.

Middle school was much the same. Rochelle was an average student, an excellent gamer, and a daddy's girl. She had friends, but they were more casual than anything. She kept them at arm's length just like her mother kept her. One night when she was in the sixth grade, Rochelle woke up to her father in tears and her mother's things gone. Abram never saw it coming, he'd loved his wife very much. Rochelle was less surprised, being rather perceptive, but the emotional distance didn't stop it from hurting. She was torn between being glad she was gone and bitter that she hadn't offered an explanation or a goodbye. Fortunately, Tanya's family loved both Abram and his daughter very much, and remained in contact with them, although they lived in Georgia. It kept the girl from being completely devoured by her anger, but it still affected her deeply.

Her relationship with her father remained as close as it ever was. Both of them blamed themselves in some way for Tanya leaving, but despite how open the lines of communication were in everything else, neither of them talked about it. Both of them probably could have used therapy, but since they were both functioning Abram didn't think it was necessary. Still, he gave in to her wants a little more often after that, but Rochelle never got spoiled or took what he did for granted. As far as the subject of her mother goes, she's dead to Rochelle and has been since the night she left. She tells anyone that asks the same, and it's the one thing her and her father will argue over. It's an easy thing to claim, as the only contact she's had with her mother since is getting postcards from a foreign countries with nothing on it but the address.

Her efforts in school were doubled. She was determined not to let her father down in any respect, and she'd decided she was going to take over the clinic when she grew up. Her father was older, after all. He needed her there, and just being at the front desk wouldn't be good enough. She planned on going to medical school, despite not being brilliant and despite not having a genuine interest in the career. In her eyes, she had enough love for her father to cover that, and enough drive to bring her grades up to A's. But she still didn't really care about academics, just saw it as a means to an end.

Games, her hobby as a child, had become a passion as a teen. Her dad got her every system that came out, and she enjoyed them all. But her unspoken bitterness about her mother’s departure was vented through her game play. She cursed at the screen, she screamed when the computer got a cheap shot, and when she had the occasional friend over war was declared. Rochelle didn't like losing, and the older she got the less she lost. Those causal friendships stayed causal, and came and went. The only people that were a constant in her life were her dad and her extended family. Abram worried about his daughter, and suggested that she reach out to people more, and to try to be more calm about things. He also told her not to swear in his presence, and since then she used rather creative alternatives, which she couldn't shake even when he wasn't around.

In the eighth grade, she started dating Josh Richter, a guy that had been pestering her about it for a while. It wasn't as much of a relationship as something to do in her eyes, but she grew fond of him. He had enough sense to collaborate with her rather than challenge her, and she opened up to him because of it. She started getting paid for helping her dad out at the front desk of the clinic, and used that money for customizing her hardware. But with Josh, she actually did other things besides studying, gaming, and working. Sometimes they even just hung out at the library and chatted over books. She liked epics, and especially loved Moby Dick. Soon, a collection of books joined her library, and she was pretty content with her life. While she still was intense while gaming, she was relaxed outside of it, and made closer friendships at school.

This continued until the middle of her ninth grade year, even though Josh ended up going to a different school. Another thing they liked to do together was go to gaming tournaments, and she was always happy as a spectator. There was something so pure about it, the spirit of competition, the skill of the combatants. What she didn't realize at this point is that she had the skills to compete with the best of them. Josh did, though, and encouraged her to sign up for one. She nearly won it, but her controller shorted out during a crucial moment, and she threw it in anger. It broke the television, and she was tossed out and banned from the venue.

Afterwards, her and Josh got into a huge argument. He couldn't deal with someone with that little control of their temper, and she told him off in as harsh a way as she could think of. After all, she'd borrowed the controller from him, it was his fault, and she certainly didn't need anyone else that couldn't stick around. He broke up with her, and Rochelle didn't stop him. But she went home and cried her eyes out. She'd grown to care for him deeply, and would have liked to at least keep him as a friend, but she simply didn't have it in her say it. That was her last time competing for a prize, and the last time she competed under her own name. Online gaming was now her special place, where she would wail on people without actually hurting anyone's feelings that she knew of.

Over the course of high school, she's found another outlet in running tabletop role-playing games as a dungeon master, and with the emphasis on storytelling and collaboration with most games, she finds it rather relaxing and is the least emotionally restrained there. Aside from her father, these are the people she's the most honest with about how she feels. For the most part, she's a challenging but fair game runner with a flair for the dramatic, but the moment she feels cheated she becomes vicious, and those sessions usually end in everyone dying in rather outlandish ways.

Rochelle is now an A student in all AP classes, and is in the top half of her class. She still doesn't care much for academia, but she works hard for all her grades, and is still deciding what university to go to. She excels at English, and can be found carrying a classic book as often as her PSP. She still works with her dad, and worries about his health, since he tends to overlook it in favor of his patients. With her hobbies and her work ethic, she doesn't get much sleep, and is seen yawning quite a bit. The most she'll drink for energy is a green tea, having heard in the clinic how bad energy drinks could be for your health. Occasionally, she'll fall asleep in classes, and has taken to recording them just in case she misses something. While she isn't popular, among the circle of people she hangs around she's known to be rather easy-going, an image she works hard to maintain.

While everything doesn't set her off, she tries her best not to get mad at all in public, as her anger tends to be rather explosive. She avoids talking about anything she's really passionate about or that upsets her. For the most part, Rochelle's conversations are about video games, the various goings-on at school, and other subjects she can speak on casually. She is aware of the social hierarchy, but doesn't see her place on it as something that's very important to her. As long as isn't actively pushing her friends away, she's fine with where she is. While she does have people she could be interested in romantically, her previous experience in dating has made her feel avoiding it is for the best.

Advantages: Rochelle is naturally competitive. She simply does not like to lose, despite her attempts to be more calm about it. She knows basic first-aid, as a result of working in a clinic. Her relationships are positive for the most part, simply because she doesn't go out of the way to make enemies and does go out of the way to control her temper.
Disadvantages: Though she does work to keep it in control, she does have a cut-throat nature and a hot temper. She has sleeping problems, as a result of many late nights. She does have friends, but she also has latent trust issues, and she could mistrust allies because of it.

Heya, Sunny! Before we give Rochelle a full critique, can you please make sure her profile matches the template? Specifically, you've skipped an extra line between Hobbies and Interests and Appearance, Appearance and Biography, and Biography and Advantages. Only one line should be skipped in each of these places. Post when that's taken care of, and we'll give her a look. Thanks!

[+] Namira Disapproves

Hiya Dee. There's some good content here, but there's also some issues with scarcity of detail that need to be resolved before I can approve Rochelle. As it stands things are a little incomplete, and need some more meat on the bones.

- Although gaming and literature are fine as interests, they aren't, by themselves, substantial enough to be the entirety of Rochelle's hobbies and interests. I'd like you to include two to three more of these, appropriately fleshed out in the biography section. One area you could add in here and expand upon later is Rochelle's interest in tabletop gaming, as that's distinct enough to qualify as a different hobby.

- Rochelle's father is stated to own a clinic but it's never specified what variety of clinic this is. I can make some inferences from other information in the profile, but it could do with being made more explicit. The fact that Abram is a doctor doesn't really get brought up at all.
wrote:She was a playful girl, but preferred games to sports. It started out as just board games, then her dad bought her a refurbished Sega Genesis and the rest was history.
- This is a little vague. At what age did Rochelle start playing board games? If her dad was busy with the clinic and her mom was distracted and distant, then who did she play them with? I'd like a little more about her developing this interest in video games, particularly what drew her to it as a child.
wrote: She began staying away from their home more often, and Rochelle was not too involved in her games.
- I'm unsure what this means. Could you rephrase it more clearly? Are you saying that Rochelle was too involved with gaming to notice her mom not being around so much?

- Lack of care or attention from a mother can have a large effect on a child. Did this ever get Rochelle down?

- Why did Rochelle keep friends at a distance?

- It seems a little much that a kid of Rochelle's age predicted her mom leaving when her dad didn't. I'd like you to rework this a little and focus more on the emotional impact. Being glad she was gone is rather vehement for a child in the sixth grade (and the subsequent 'she's dead to Rochell'), and suggests a more hostile relationship than had previously been indicated.

- On a similar note, it appears a bit odd that Tanya would just skip out on her child and marriage entirely, especially if her side of the family was fond of Rochelle and Abram. I'd like this section to be expanded a bit; cutting off all ties and travelling to foreign countries seems very extreme a reaction for being bored with the relationship. (And given Tanya only had part time jobs, it does raise the question as to where she'd get the income to just wander to different countries).

- In general this aspect of the character feels a little forced. Obviously the profile is about Rochelle and not her parents, but there appears to be some missing background with regards to Tanya leaving, like there's another side to the story that isn't quite coming across? I know Rochelle might not necessarily be aware of the exact reasons, but it comes across a little odd.

- This isn't clear. Is Rochelle already helping out at the clinic, by being on the front desk, or is this just indication that she aspires to more?

- Though Rochelle plays every system, you don't actually specify what kinds of games she enjoys playing. FPS? Fighting games?

- I'd like a bit more on her literature interest, as it's a bit minimal right now.

- Rochelle seems quite hostile and driven. How does this affect her around others? It's not really clear whether she stopped holding friends at arm's length, and at current it seems like that she wouldn't have many close friends. Is she socially isolated, or does she have a friendship group? There's only the brief description of not being very popular, and being considered easy going seems to be a contradiction to the rest of her personality.

- I'd like her disadvantages bulked out a bit. Being cut throat isn't really a disadvantage, and sleeping problems are comparatively minor. Some more meat is needed here.

Lemme know when you've got this all fixed up!
