*A window smashes in the background, followed by the crunch of wood breaking.*
"YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FUCKING KIDDING ME..."
"Well, parliament can block the vote, right? Parlinent's gotta block the vote..."

In all seriousness, this is awful. Absolutely awful. David Cameron gambled the country on his own career and lost both. I'm seriously considering moving to a part of the commonwealth that isn't turning to the right. Canada looks good since I hate the heat.

I'm so angry and disappointed in everything. Litterally the only chance is for parliament to stop this madness before we leave. I could scream. In fact, I will scream!: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

Mildly curious as to why this is awful from the people who would actually have studied this while I'm desperately tryharding Basic Life 101?

I do lean quite a bit more 'right' in general than most of SotF, and I'm certainly not up to date on the fallout from this move, but to my limited knowledge, Britain was getting kinda screwed from the EU deal.
Constructive criticism is always welcome! Feel free to send me a PM if you have any pointers or feedback you'd like to share!

Eh, we had a good EU deal thanks to not having to take the Euro and a couple of other provisions.

Still it takes 2 years for the accords to be fully processed and we might not even leave by the end of this depending how the talks actually go.

As someone who is extremely far left I think the decision to leave is asinine and that leavers have made a massive mistake.

And on that note, anyone who voted to stay: I am so sorry.

I do lean quite a bit more 'right' in general than most of SotF, and I'm certainly not up to date on the fallout from this move, but to my limited knowledge, Britain was getting kinda screwed from the EU deal.
Interestingly, from what I gather the actual leadership of both political parties (left and right) wanted to stay. It was something like 80% of elected officials.

As to the deal... it's very up for debate, but the numbers thrown around by all sides were total lies according to most observers (with Leave as the worst--they counted the money the UK pays into the EU and left out the money the EU pays into the UK). One of the big things though is that if the UK leaves the EU, they lose all say in EU trade agreements and may be setting themselves up for a kicking when it comes to future dealings with EU states in the form of import/export taxes and the like--potentially a problem because the EU is their biggest trading partner by far, and there's a chance Germany and France decide to make an example over this. There's also the fact that EU citizens have free work and travel between member countries (kinda like moving between states in the US)--someone from France could work in England or Italy without a visa. Depending on how stuff goes, this may isolate the UK and/or screw their citizens who are currently living abroad under the agreement.

The theory behind leaving, to my understanding, was threefold: one camp used fearmongering ideology against Muslim immigrants (who are, ironically... largely unaffected by this decision as they tend not to be EU citizens anyways), one camp was sick to death of the politicians and voted largely on the assumption that anything backed by almost everyone had to be a pack of lies, and one camp believes that the UK will be able to negotiate a better standing for itself freed of the EU's regulations and fees.

Part of the complicating factor, though, is that Scotland and Ireland are both super heavily pro-EU and may leave the UK over this. Scotland actually came fairly close two years ago, and one factor in their remaining in the UK was protecting their spot in the EU. Right now there's a lot of speculation, but at least in the short term the UK's economy has tanked overnight and there are talks of varying degrees of seriousness of chunks of the country leaving.

And, of course, there is the fact that numerous other member states are expressing their discontent with the EU and how it's handling the affairs of various member countries. Holland especially seems to want to leave, and Britain's vote has set a precedent that may result in the entire Union collapsing.

Which would be something to tell the grand-kids for sure, but not something I particularly want to tell them.

From a left-leaning Australian with somewhat limited knowledge about the situation's point of view, I can honestly say this sounds like a worse idea that Scoxit (Doesn't have the same ring to it, I'm afraid)

From what I can interpret about Brexit, as every news station here insists on calling it, the two main things causing people to vote for it to leave (again, take everything I say here with a grain of salt, I am neither British nor well versed in the world of European Politics) are the possibility of removing David Cameron from office, as from my understanding he was somewhat of an unpopular figure at the time of the vote, and the prevention of refugees entering the country.

David's announcement that he would step down from the Prime Ministership would have swayed a large number of voters who would have otherwise voted to remain in the EU, but those who were so sure that the majority would vote to Remain, that they decided to send Cameron a message. Of course my sole piece of "evidence" on this matter is a few half-remembered articles on the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Network, not American. ABC AU is owned by the government) that showed that a large number of those interviewed said they voted to leave, but didn't actually want Britain to leave the EU.

The second group of people would have voted to leave the EU in a shortsighted attempt to stem the perceived flow of refugees into the country. The tightened border controls would have indeed caused a significant drop in the number of refugees entering the country, it would also cause massive trading issues. Many large corporations would have been broken up due to a fractured EU, causing the loss of a great many jobs. Importing items would be more expensive, and those working across the border would have extra troubles doing so.

In conclusion, the idea to leave the EU could have devastating effects on the country, as shown by the value of the GBP plummeting because the vote was passed, and this is before the nation has even officially left. Along with the other reasons to stay mentioned above, the United Kingdom would, in my opinion at least, be far better off remaining in the EU.
