Bryan felt a little dissappointed when he and Tori finally arrived at the western shore; the blue sky and soft breeze that he enjoyed so much had been replaced by dense gray fog and not much else. The waves still rolled liesurely back and forth on the sand, but the vast ocean he'd expected to see was shrouded to the point where the shallows dissappeared into nothing. This wasn't his beach at all.

It was fortunate that the marina had been marked on the island map, because there was no way to spot it in the distance. The two had no choice but to just follow the shoreline until it came into view.

Bryan halted his pace for a moment and looked to Tori. "Wait here," he said. "If anything happens, gimme a shout." He was uneasy about leaving her out in the open, but then again who would even be able to see her anyway? It couldn't possibly take that long. Hefting his daypack on his shoulder, Bryan made his way toward the solitary marina.

((continued from We Survive by Friendship))

Tori had decided in these past 4 days with Bryan, that she'd have to pay close attention to him, if she wanted to actually understand him. Sure, him being a guy and say 'No, Yes, Never mind, and Maybe' actually all mean those very things. It's not like women where theres a hidden meaning behind every word it seems. What she really tired to focus on was his face, and how he reacted to things. So far, Bryan has seemed pretty laid back in the cases... but right now he actually seemed upset about something. Tori would have asked him what was wrong, but just as she went to do so she was cut off by Bryan's orders which by now she was pretty used to hearing. Though she kind of resented them, because she wished he'd see her more as a side kick instead of someone to protect, deep down she was greatful for them. He always seemed to be right.

She nodded and kind of chuckled at his idea to shout if trouble came. It seemed pretty funny, considering they were no where really near anyone... still all the same, she had a pair of lungs on her that could be heard for miles.

"Good luck."

"Sir, the boy's approaching."

Steven Wilson let out an audible sigh as one of the nameless grunts running around the now secure marina burst into his quarters to inform him that Bryan Calvert had come to pick up his weapon. He hadn't wanted to deal with another day on this god-forsaken island. However, Danya himself had informed him that being as Calvert was "his student", it was his job to deal with the prize negotiations. He grabbed the dark black sunglasses that set next to him on his desk and slid them over his face before heading out the door of the ship's cabin.

Upon reaching the deck, Steven grabbed the large bag containing Bryan's soon-to-be prize, a Striker Streetsweeper, and flung it over his shoulder. Calvert had been a troublemaker in school, much as Miss Varella, yesterday's winner, had been. It was no surprise to him to see children like those two showing up to claim prizes for murdering their schoolmates. He expected no less of them, really. Calvert had always helped that wretchedly disgusting janitor take care of the school grounds. It was a good place for him.

Wilson could see Bryan trekking through the sands and heading toward the marina. He continued to hold the large bag containing the Streetsweeper absent-mindedly. He had no intention of breaking out any sort of artillery. Unlike Marvin and Sonia, he didn't feel the need to carry a gun on himself. If Calvert so much as breathed the wrong way, one of the dozens of soldiers littered around the area would gun him down before he could blink, much less take down someone like Steven Wilson. Of course, the hidden kevlar underneath his shirt was a little extra insurance on the matter.

"Well, hello Mr. Calvert," he called flatly to the student heading his direction, "I do believe this is the first time you've ever been on time for anything. Would you like a gold star?"

Bryan hadn't really expected Wilson to show up. To be fair, he hadn't known what to expect, but at least he had figured they'd send someone expendable. Maybe Wilson was. Maybe Danya wanted to get rid of him. It was tempting to just open fire on the twisted sonofabitch, but Bryan wasn't so stupid that he didn't understand his position. If he pulled the trigger on that shotgun, it might as well have been pointed directly at himself. His entourage would make quick work of him. Bryan hated being on the bitch-slapping end of the upper hand, but he would just have to get the fuck over it and swallow his pride.

Wilson made a crack about his school attendance, which he really hoped his ex-principal hadn't spent all night rehearsing. Bryan stopped in front of him, reluctantly slinging the SPAS-12 over his shoulder to indicate that he wasn't going to try anything. His ex-principal was taller than him, and Bryan looked up at him with contempt.

"You're a funny guy," he responded, sizing Wilson up as if he wasn't surrounded by bodyguards with hair-trigger fingers. His glance shifted momentarily to the bag in Wilson's hand. "Is that for me?"

Steven looked down at the more wiry figure of Bryan Calvert, a half smirk appearing on the corners of his mouth as Bryan motioned toward the bag that was slung over Steven's shoulder. Bryan had always been a rebel... a bad boy. Wilson took satisfaction in knowing that the position he was in right now was probably eating him up inside. Danya hadn't been very specific as to the details of this mission. Steven had only been ordered to conduct negotions with the prize winner. Whether he lived or died past this moment was irrelevant. After all, people were looking for a spectacle.

"Perhaps," Wilson grinned, "But I have to ask you, Mr. Calvert, do you really deserve this? What'd you do to earn it? How far are you willing to go to get out of this competition... what do you even have to go back to?"

Wilson was eating this up. These students had always been nuisances to him. People like Calvert and Varella were always in his office because they just couldn't seem to follow rules. Now, retaliation on Bryan's part would get him nothing except dead, and Steven wasn't hesitant to rock the boat just a little bit. He fully intended on toying with Calvert a little before handing over the streetsweeper.

"Do I deserve it?" Bryan responded, giving Bathurst's former head-honcho a quizzical look that gave way to a snicker. He cracked a smile, as if Wilson had just delivered the punchline of a joke. What had he done to earn it? He'd killed, like, five people. What did he have to go back to? He had his family to go back to, but that became less and less likely every day. Bryan had a promise to keep, and it frightened him to even consider his other option, so he pushed it deep down and refused to give it any thought. If there was one thing he could thank his attention-deficit disorder for, it would be the ease at which his mind became wrapped around the fight around him, rather than the fight inside him.

Bryan was doing his best to keep his anger in check, but damn if that sonofabitch Wilson didn't just keep pushing. His smile faded, and he fixed his ex-principal with a glare. "I'm not going back," he said. "And you better hope you don't get what you deserve, Steve-O, because it just might be waiting for you in that bag, too."

"Idiot," Steven responded cooly, "if you turned that weapon on me now, you'd be dead before you ever got the bag unzipped. But you know that, don't you, Calvert? You plan on delivering some final retribution before taking yourself out in a blaze of glory? Something to that effect, I take it? Good luck on that."

Steven reluctantly dropped the bag from his shoulder and tossed the heavy pack toward Bryan.

"A word of advice, Calvert. Do this for yourself. If you don't plan on going back, then everything you're doing right now is meaningless. There's no second place in this game. You're either the winner, or you join a hundred other people on the boss's list of the dead. You can either be famous or never known... if you're going to murder people to get ahead, do it for yourself. Otherwise, in the end, you'll be nobody. Time'll pass, people will forget you ever existed. Do you remember the names of any of the last contestants other than the winner? I don't. We don't give you stuff like this to see it go to waste."

Steven smiled smugly to himself. He didn't know who or what Calvert was fighting for. He didn't care. Having been a military man himself, he understood the concept of never leaving a man behind... but sometimes, you just had to. Sometimes, you had no other choice. In the end, your life is always more important than someone else's, and you can't save them all.

"Alright, Mr. Calvert. Clear out of the area immediately. If you don't, your collar will be detonated."

Calvert sniffed in dismissal at the whole kamikaze idea. Wilson tossed him the bag; it was fairly heavy, and probably something good, but the satisfaction of expanding his arsenal had been spoiled by the unpleasant appearance of his former principal-turned-international terrorist. Bryan cast him half-a-glance to suggest that he was leaving and turned to do so, but Wilson piped up with some last-minute advice for him. Unfortunately it wasn't very interesting, and he found himself much more curious as to what he'd been issued as a prize.

As Bryan unzipped the bag and peered inside he nodded absentmindedly at odd intervals, hoping that this blatant sign of uninterest and disrespect, which he'd often used more subtley in the principal's office, was pissing Wilson off. The gun had a drum magazine, which at first had Bryan thinking that it was a grenade launcher, but when he felt around inside the bag he came across a box of 12-gauge shotgun shells. Another shotgun. Tori wouldn't be able to wield one of these suckers, and he certainly couldn't manage two, so basically all he was getting out of this was a fresh box of ammo. Which he withdrew before half-heartedly tossing the bag, along with the superfluous weapon, off of the dock and into the murky water below. Now Wilson told him to vacate the area, and he was more than happy to oblige.

"Uh-huh," he answered with little disdain for the added warning, slipping the ammunition into the side pocket on his daypack and finally taking his leave. Part of him was content with never seeing Wilson again, but he would be lying if he said he wouldn't enjoy five minutes locked in a room with the sick bastard. It was Wilson's fault they were here, and Bryan would remember that.

Tori had been waiting for Bryan to come back for a while. He hadn't been gone for too long, but then again, in a place like this, how was she to know what was 'too long' or not.

She was getting a little chilled, so she continued to bob up and down on the balls of her feet to keep the blood flowing and warm her legs up. Since the fog was starting to go away a bit, she knew that it would probably make the ground even more slippery due to the rain. If something were to happen and they'd have to run, she'd have to be extra careful. One thought that came to mind when she realized it'd be hard to run, was something from T.V. she watch a while back. She had been sitting infront of the T.V. with the Discovery Channel on, finishing up some homework for Geography. It showed a clip of a lion sneaking up of a heard of deer or something. When the Lion attacked, all them went off running, and the one that feel was the one who got eaten.

Tori could feel her nerves sharpen a bit and the chill running up and down her spine wasn't just because of the weather.

Come onnn Bryan... let's gooooooooo....

((continued from Sweet Serenity))

Harry had departed shortly after the others, glad to have found at least a few people who hadn't been overtaken by the game. He did wish that they would have stayed and formulated some kind of plan. An alliance, maybe. He wasn't granted either by any of the apparently neutral parties. Of course, his resolve to defy Danya and his subordinates was as firm as ever. In spite of Mary-Anne's death...perhaps because of it.

The beach was becoming less and less shrouded by the diminishing gray fog.

~~~
Bryan was glad to see that nothing had gone wrong; Tori was waiting for him right where he'd left her. As he approached, he gave the slightest wave to indicate that everything had gone smoothly. He wasn't sure whether or not to tell her about Wilson.
"No problem?" he asked, just loud enough for her to hear as he came within a couple feet. Her arms were crossed. Bryan hoped she hadn't become fed up with waiting.
~~~

"Oh, shit--" The words came spilling softly between Harry's lips and a split second later he felt his index finger pull instinctively on the trigger of the Agram. This was certainly not because of the two people he saw just ahead; he'd been aware of them and pressed forward anyway. They didn't seem volatile. But as soon as he'd gotten close enough to notice just who one of the individuals was (the other was a girl), Harry had felt that any other action than firing at the familiar shotgun-wielding skinhead would cost the girl her life.

Harry remembered a couple days ago at the industrial yard. It seemed like such a long time ago. Mr Sunshine; he wished he could say he was surprised to see him still alive. He also wished that it didn't feel this right to fire his weapon at his bald adversary, but alas, it did. With any luck he could stop him from hurting that girl. It wasn't Mary-Anne, but right now it sure as fuck looked like her.

~~~
"Ssssshit!" There was such little time to think as a hail of bullets screamed between him and Tori, kicking up sand in a short line. Bryan was struck with a sudden panic that he had to strangle in half-a-second if he were to save either of their lives. Fortunately, panic was a relatively weak enemy. Bryan's eyes darted frantically towards the shore, where some rocks jutted up out of the sand. That was the only cover available on the otherwise vacant beach.
Pitching himself forward with a hell-bent fury that would probably alarm Tori even more than the gunfire at their feet, Bryan tugged at her wrist as he ran past her to lead her to the rocks. "Come on!" he barked.
"No problem?"
Tori was relieved to see Bryan coming towards her, still in one piece. Before she could say anything, she was quickly being pulled, once again, by the wrist towards some rocks near by.
There had been a boy in the distance, from what she could get a glance of. Bullets were being shot everywhere and nearly nicked Tori's leg as they both dove for cover. She began to frantically search her bag for a weapon that she could use, though, the first thing she grabbed was her axe. shit! Tori found herself short of words as all she could do was look at Bryan with a 'what the hell do we do' expression. weeeelllll???!!
Bryan was just as bewildered as his companion. He shook his head and scrunched his face up to relay to her his feelings on the matter. Whoever it was, they were packing some serious firepower. A submachine gun certainly beat out a shotty as far as range went, and it didn't help that there was so much open ground on the beach.
A gear suddenly turned in the back of his head, and Bryan realized exactly who the assailant was...or at least he had a good idea. It was that punkass from the industrial yard, and from the looks of things he was still good for ammo.
~~~

Harry cursed under his breath as Mr Sunshine dragged the girl by the wrist, towards the cover of some rocks on the shore. He had been hoping that his aim, sudden and frantic as it was, was true enough to neutralize her captor. That wasn't the case, and Harry feared that he may have just sealed her fate entirely.

On the other hand, why would he have pulled her with him when the shots were fired? He wanted her alive as far as Harry could tell. For a time, at least. Long enough to have his way with her. He didn't have time to condsider Sunshine's motives, though; he ran for cover accordingly, committed to the young girl's rescue. Of course, cover was all but non-existent on the deserted shore. Harry sprinted toward the scattered rocks, which spilled into the ocean and diminished gradually under the surf. His sneakers took in water as he splashed through the shallows, but he treated this mild discomfort as if it were nothing at all. Finally he was safely behind a wide rock.

"Hand over the girl!" he called, fairly certain that this would do little more than evoke an insult.

~~~
"Hey, fuck you!"
"Why the hell does he want me?! I never even saw him before in my life, let alone do anything to him!!"
Tori's mind was racing, as thoughts of what reasons the boy would have to want her. He didn't sound like he was going to give up if they said no. Though she couldn't tell you the make of his gun, what she did know was that it sure was powerful and could probably outdue any of the weapons that she and Bryan now had. Tori glaced down at her bag, up at her hands, and then back again at her partner.
"What do we do?"
"Get down," Bryan grunted in response, reaching over and pulling her down behind the cover of a large rock. His feet splashed in the water, but only a small amount of water leaked through the tongues of his boots and into his socks. He drummed the fingers of his left hand on the grip of the SPAS-12, trying to pull some kind of plan together. He couldn't.
'Whatever. Plans are for chumps anyway.' He was just being spiteful, really, because he was a lousy tactician in this kind of situation. Bryan would have been so much more in his element if everyone was unarmed. He highly doubted that this thorn in his side would still be paining him if that were the case.
~~~

'Fucking guns. I'd be so much better off if we were both unarmed.' The bald guy looked like he was built pretty solid, and he certainly seemed aggressive, but Harry was confident that it would be a piece of cake in a hand-to-hand situation, given his blackbelt. Plus it wouldn't be as easy to kill his opponent. As dangerous as this psycho was, Harry didn't want any more blood on his hands.

'Then again, he's leaving me little recourse...'

There was really no time to form a strategy. That girl's life was at stake. Harry wouldn't have any more of that shit; he stuck the Agram out from the side of his cover, kneeling down to stay low and consequently soaking his baggy pants. This was as trivial as the soaker in each shoe. Sunshine and his captive hadn't moved at all, as Harry just noticed his opponent duck down out of sight.

"Aaand...go!" he whispered under his breath, heading deeper into the water towards another rock jutting out. Just to show that he meant business with this asshole, he fired his SMG at the base of the rock that baldy was behind. It was suggested because they were so near the docks, but the depth of the water increased much more rapidly to best accomidate incoming boats. Harry found himself knee deep now, behind a tall rock. Closer to the enemy.

BOOM! Something shattered next to his head.

~~~
"There you are--" the words were just barely out of his mouth when they were drowned out by the roar of Bryan's shotgun. He stood up after the short hail of bullets and spotted the fucker bolting towards a taller rock, unfortunately too late to hit him. Instead the shot clipped the tall rock and a couple shards of slate peeled off in a small cloud of debris. Bryan flared his nostrils like a frustrated bull, pumping the shotgun and ducking down to gesture to Tori. "This way!" he whispered urgently, trotting low out into the water where the rock formations thickened.
Tori tried her hardest to stay quiet and do as Bryan said, though it was hard with bullets raining everywhere. She didn't get this guys beef with them.
She followed Bryan as he led them behind a larger rock, more into the water some. It soaked her shoes, but by now, that was the least thing she had to worry about. He was too far away for her to try and throw her axe. Then again, even if he was close, she'd still probably ruin it somehow.
Bryan fired, and though it missed him, it came close... hitting the edge of the rock making a cloud of dust, giving them time to duck again. She couldn't think of a plan, and time was cutting short.
"What's his problem with you? It's like it's personal or something."
