[Amanda White, continued from Cowards Die Many Times]
It was a clear night. A pure, cold night. Maybe this was the reason Amanda felt so unburdened. Of course, it could be because she just slept for hours, but then she would feel more groggy. The girl didn't think much since she left the town. She merely followed an invisible straight line through the forest, or at least something that she thought was a straight line. Eventually, the sounds of flowing water piqued her interest.
Amanda reached a dark jet of water. It was not very wide, maybe 6 feet, but due to her flashlight, she could clearly see that there were a lot of stones, accompanied by a fast stream. Amanda wondered how deep it was, but she didn't dare to test this. The water flowed much to fast for her taste. Thus she decided to only sat down near it, and to put her hand in the stream. Her hand was quickly pulled back, the ice cold temperature surprised Amanda.
After waiting for a few seconds, Amanda put her bag on the floor and opened it. It was difficult to see what it contained, she can only use one hand after all, and had to put he flashlight to the side. She was eventually able to grab her water bottles and the MRE. She drank the entire first water bottle empty with only a few swigs. Then, she took the cookie from the MRE and ate it completely in one bite. Amanda just realized how hungry she was, after all, she didn't eat anything for.... a very long time. Quickly, the loaf of bread followed the cookie. Certainly, her table manners were the first thing to die here.
Once Amanda finished devouring her white bread, she began to wonder if some of her class mates already died. She remembered that she was woken by a so called announcement, something which listed all the students who died already. Unfortunately, Amanda was asleep, or as good as asleep when they came on, so she had no clue whom she had to be wary off. The girl took her empty bottle and filled it with the water from the stream. Once she finished that, she put the bottle into the backpack again.
Amanda sat there silently. Her eyes, empty. She didn't know what to do.
Amanda didn't know why exactly she wandered so far. After she woke up, she just felt the urge to walk. No matter where. As Amanda sat besides the dark stream, she began to question herself. The night lost some of it's serenity, maybe partly because Amanda's nose was clogged up by now. Maybe because her mind began to clog up too. Not with snot, though.
Everything was going downhill. Amanda always feared the Program. Each announcement day, she prayed to God that he would spare her. This time, he didn't listen. The idea of this terrible game, to kill or be killed, it was something Amanda didn't understand. Even as she was thrown into that game, she didn't realize the full scale of her impending doom. Why? Was it because she met Jasmine, Ashley and Aaron? Because they gave her a feeling of security? Probably. Amanda silently scolded herself for losing them. Then she ran into Anastasia, and Amanda was surprised she didn't lost her bowel content back then. That severe acute fear was an experience which Amanda would have liked to not be had. Maxim was the next person she encountered and she still felt weird about that boy. Well, he wanted to find that Ginger, so at least he had a goal, unlike Amanda.
Seconds passed in silence, only interrupted by a light sneeze.
It was cold, dark and Amanda had no idea what to do, where to go. Sure, she could just keep on going to whereever she randomly wants to. But it wasn't satisfying. It left an empty space in her mind. Maybe she could try to find the rest of the "band", maybe she cou- Oh, that's a good plan
The young lady quickly grabbed her belongings. Trusting her guts to give her a direction, she wandered off. She hoped that she would regain the security of a group.
