((Marcus Redder continued from Shaken, Not Stirred))

Marcus looked a mess.

As he’d fled from the Sports Centre he knew his appearance had been ravaged more than it’d ever been, but it was only when he’d found himself in the midst of the Salon, surveying his appearance in a vaulted mirror that he realised just how bad it was. Maybe it was some lingering optimism or desperate hope that things weren’t as bad as he feared, but the longer he gazed upon the mess his face and body had become the more reluctant he was to accept that he was the same Marcus Redder from back at Whittree.

His clothing lay in a rough pile to his side as he looked at his reflection, his boxers the only article covering his bruised and broken body. Droplets of Eden’s blood had clung to and soaked through his shirt and jeans, amalgamating with the layers of sweat he’d accumulated in spite of the bitter cold to form a sickening and greasy layer across his whole body. Bruises were spotted all over his torso, in different stages of development; some were a noxious yellow whilst others were ripe purple, tender and painful to the touch. His face was flushed and caked in dried blood and tears, bags forming under his eyes; a further bruise he’d acquired during his altercation with Vahka was setting, brushing over the soft flesh of his lips. The beginnings of stubble had began to form in rough patches across his jawline and his hair was a compete mess, thick with grime and even more of Eden’s blood.

He’d done the best he could for his hand, having appraised Eden’s medical supplies and replaced his own makeshift bandage with one from the kit and applied ointment and the like to it. He didn’t know whether it’d actually helped in any way, but the pain had settled down to a dull throb and he no longer felt the need to nurse it as much, so he supposed it’d have to do. There wasn’t much else that could be done for it, really, not unless there was some future doctor hidden away in the resort somewhere or someone had been gifted a book on do-it-yourself medical procedures as their weapon.

He’d been in this place for only a day and he already looked as though he’d been tossed through some sort of typhoon. What would his family think of him if they saw him now? They’d no longer think of him as the perfect boy they’d raised him to be, the kind and caring kid who always wanted to help and wanted to badly to make a better life for his family. They’d think of him as a murderous monster who’d taken the life of an innocent girl. There was no way they’d take him back now, was there?

The thought alone made his heart race a little faster, sent pangs of longing and panic rushing though him. If his family, the one group of people he knew he could rely on and whom had always promised to be there for him, weren’t there to support him, what could he do? Marcus was a boy who needed support, needed someone to cheer him along as he went about his goals, no matter what they were. It was the same with soccer, or with cooking, or with studying. If there wasn’t someone to reassure him that he was doing a good job, then he’d find himself in a panic and become consumed with self-doubt. It’d been like that since the day he was born, and he knew it’d be like that until the day he died.

Marcus tore his eyes away from the mirror and made his way across the parlour he’d situated himself in towards to his bags. A bitter and icy chill ran through him, causing his teeth to chatter and goosebumps to prickle along his arms and reminding him of just how cold this place was. He’d never really gotten used to the cold, always keeping a sweater on as much as he could or latching himself onto someone in a tight embrace to warm himself up. He had neither of those things here.

He sat down beside his belongings and pulled himself into a tight ball, attempting to warm himself up a little as he tucked his clothes up to his chest. Before he could put them back on or do much else, however, the first announcement began to blare out around him; a listing of the dead and those who’d taken their lives. The dead passed in a blur, none of the names sounding at familiar to him, save for Eden’s. She’d been the only Whittree kid to die. If it wasn’t for him, then every one of his classmates would still be alive, even if half of them had turned to murder just as he’d done. Vahka had taken a life too, which was far from a surprise. He’d already shown what he was capable of back at the museum; killing and death was the next logical step on whatever path his former friend was taking. It was Taylor he’d killed, the same Taylor he’d encountered back at the nature path. Jewel, Alice, Leah, they’d killed too. Four of his classmates, the ones he’d trusted so much and had once been so sure wouldn’t kill, had stooped to his level. He tried being surprised, but it was impossible, not with his mind so addled and disillusioned.

Marcus rocked forward a little, the bitter sting of tears making itself known as they danced on his vision before trailing down his face, accompanied by hoarse and uneven sobs that echoed throughout the empty area.

He was scared, and he was tired, and he wanted a hug, and the only thing he could do was cry.

((Angie Hart continued from Chance is Not on Your Side))

Ever since the announcement, Angie had been wandering across the island, being a little more wary than she had been before. The list of the deceased had really scared her, and she was determined not to end up on the next one. However, she still didn't want to fight anybody, so she instead decided to try to stay out of sight and move carefully through the resort grounds. So far, it had been working pretty well.

Eventually, she came across a familiar building. The bright orange paint job and gold letters immediately registered in her mind. She didn't know how or why, but she had somehow managed to backtrack all the way to the spa. She checked her map and saw so many places on the island, and discovered that she had spent pretty much all of her time in a small area. This disappointed her a little. Even though SOTF wasn't a sightseeing tour, she had still wanted to see a bit of the island before the game really started. Now, in all likelihood, it would be too late for that.

Angie put her map away and looked at the spa building. It was familiar, and had sort of a comforting feeling thanks to the friendly interactions that she had with the girls that had been there previously. She doubted that they were still there, of course, but she still had a good feeling about the place. Working off of this feeling, she stepped through the door and entered the spa.

Once Angie was inside, she was greeted to the sight of a boy, curled up in a ball and crying his eyes out. Judging by the blood, sweat, and visible bruises, he looked like he had definitely seen better days. Angie wasn't sure if he was a killer overwhelmed by what he'd done, or just a kid that broke down after a fight, but she couldn't just leave him there to cry alone. She called out to him, trying to see if she could get a response.

"Hey..." She tried her best to sound comforting. "Are you all right?"

After awhile, Marcus’s sobs began to trail off, replaced by his shaking breaths and the soft sound of tears and droplets of salvia as they landed upon the linoleum floor beneath him. He remained in his crouched position for a few minutes more, the exhaustion of the past few days bearing down on him overpowering the icy chill sweeping through him. The fingers of his good hand rolled through the fabric of his clothing, spreading further streaks of scarlet across their already-bloodsoaked surface; an arbitrary attempt to collect the thoughts that remained haphazardly scattered throughout his mind. He kept his other hand clasped over his face, his eyes clenched so tightly shut as though keeping them closed would teleport him back to the normalcy of Whittree.

The sound of nearby footfalls immediately pulled him from his stupor, eyes flickering open and body rigid as he prepared to grab his belonging and bolt from the room. Before he could do either action, the door had already been gently pried open, accompanied by the soft and reassuring words of a familiar voice.

Angie wasn’t someone Marcus knew particularly well, having been too occupied with everything else to become little more than mildly acquainted with her. But from what little time they’d had to talk during spare moments in art class she’d always seemed friendly and amicable. But none of that mattered anymore. They’d been dropped in a place where any predispositions or opinions from school had been cast away; his classmates would no longer think of him as nice Marcus who’d always tried to cheer people up, instead he’d simply be a murderer. The same could be said of Angie - sweet as she seemed, she could just as easily be a killer-in-waiting; there was no way of knowing anymore.

Marcus hated that. He hated that there weren’t any concrete rules here, hated he couldn’t rely on anything from back home. There wasn’t any guidance or anything to help him make decisions; he just had himself, for the first time in a long while, and he had no idea what to do.

So when Angie had started walking towards him, Marcus fell back on the only thing he was good at, the only thing he’d been truly known for back in Whittree; the same old happy-go-lucky optimistic personality that’d stubbornly persisted throughout his life. It’d been genuine then, even with a few down points, and though he couldn’t think of ever really returning to it, there wasn’t anything else he could think of doing as his initial panic continued to sweep through him. The only alternative he could think of as was to go along with what she’d probably thought of him that morning, as the announcements blared across the resort; to look like some manic killer ready to pounce on her, knife in hand.

“Angie,” he smiled broadly, a droplet of blood dripping from his lip and latching onto his teeth. “I’m fine. Just a little sore, is all. What’s up?”

((Jaxon Street continues from Countdown))

After everything that'd happened he kind of wished he'd gotten to know Taylor better. He loved that bitch way more than a lot of the other bitches did, to the point he'd have trusted him with his life had they met up on this shithole show, but he felt there was a void in their friendship. He knew so much about Aidan and his family, Will's family, Sebastien's family, all their families, but Taylor was just that one he'd never gotten around to spending a weekend with, inviting to New York when his mom was going to Fashion Week, all that jazz. And now he'd never know. That opportunity hung there and Jaxon was a fool not to take it.

But he had to keep going. There was this pressure on his shoulders to keep strong. Not just for his sake, but for the sake of anyone who needed to rely on him. This wasn't a place where you could run from your problems forever, like at school, and Jaxon knew a thing or two about running. You were stuck with your problems until one of them was dead. And Jaxon needed to not be the dead one if any good was going to come of this.

Somewhere along the boardwalk, Jaxon had taken the lower half of the Medusa costume and wrapped it around his waist, just like Shannel. He was only missing a twisted snaking headpiece and those giant latex titties now, but those weren't going to help keep him warm. That goddamn sneak of a season, winter. He needed his legs warm but able to run and that half of the costume wasn't going to stop him. But it was going to keep his legs warm through the denim. So here he was, Season 66's true 'most flamboyant' contestant, strutting along the boardwalk in a t-shirt and dress over purple jeans. If Honey were here, she'd slap him. As it stood, he could commit whatever fashion atrocities he wanted when nobody with a lick of fashion sense was around to judge him.

He eventually saw someone in the distance and followed from far behind. They'd stopped at a store and gone in. Jaxon caught up soon after to see what kind of store it was, and it was a Spa. The non-existent hair on Jaxon's chest stood up as he saw one of his favourite past-times being used as a possible murder scene in the near future. Whatever the cause, you don't interrupt a good facial or desecrate a place of worship like this.

Jaxon opened the door and strode in, only to see two foreign students together. Girl and a boy. There's not much else he knew about them other than their gender and appearances. Nothing to judge them for, nothing to judge them on. Meanwhile, here he was standing in a dress and jeans. They had plenty to judge him on. Time to jump in first.

"Sup bitches?" Jaxon said grimly, leaning against the counter, "Last time I thought someone wasn't playing I was right, so I'm just gonna think the same thing about you guys, 'kay?"

Now that she got a good look at his face, Angie recognized the mysterious crying boy as Marcus Redder, one of her classmates from Whittree. Nice guy, but clearly looking worse for wear here. Weirdly enough, he was acting totally casual despite the fact that he was covered in blood and bruises. Naturally, this confused the heck out of Angie.

"What are you talking about, Marcus? I mean, you're covered in blood! How did you even-"

She stopped mid-sentence as she came to a realization. She remembered the announcement from before. Marcus had been on it. He had killed Eden from school. That was probably where the blood came from. she couldn't bring herself to continue speaking. She could only look at him wordlessly, with a knowing look in her eyes.

Her gaze was averted when a newcomer announced his appearance. Angie saw the new guy, a boy decked out in dark blue with lots of piercings. He seemed to be in a dour mood, but he expressed hope that the two wouldn't be playing the game.

"Don't worry. We're not..." Angie stopped herself and stole a quick glance back at Marcus. She wasn't sure if she could trust him, especially since he already had blood on his hands, as well as pretty much everywhere else. Taking this into account, she amended her statement.

"I'm not playing."

A wave of anxiety washed over Marcus as Angie responded, questioning why he could act so casually upbeat in the state he was in. He curled into himself even further as she spoke, the increasing urge to bolt from the area and try to make a fresh start only halted by the arrival of another boy in the parlour. Marcus had to resist the urge to rush the boy as soon as he’d entered and hug him; all too grateful for the distraction from Angie’s questions and the prominent reminder of what he’d done.

The new boy wasn’t somebody that Marcus recognised, and fact that he was no doubt from the other school was solidified almost as soon as he took in the boy’s eccentric and multicoloured hairstyle. Even if he’d hidden away most of the time at school, there was no way unusual hair like that would’ve escaped Marcus’s notice. That was perfect. He didn’t know who Marcus was or who he’d been or what he’d done, there was no way he could judge him or hate him. This new boy was a fresh slate, a chance to find an ally. A chance to find a friend.

While Angie and the newcomer were distracted by each other, Marcus took the opportunity to hurriedly pull his shirt and jeans back on, repressing the urge to gag as he felt the slickness of blood against his legs. As he adjusted his belt buckle with one hand, he ran his fingers thoughtfully through his hair with the other in an attempt to gauge what he should do next. He could run whilst they were occupied, try and find some other place to collect himself and properly clean up; or he could join in with what they were saying, find some momentary cure for the pangs of loneliness that continued to cycle through him. There were other alternatives, other paths he could’ve taken, but he didn’t want to think about those. He didn’t go back to what’d happened in the sports centre, he wanted to forget it and go on like it’d never happened.

“I’m not either,” Marcus chirped, closing the distance between himself and the pairing as quickly as his legs would allow, the usual spring in his step ever-so-slightly diminished by the dull ache that punctuated each of his movements. “I got into a bit of a kerfuffle a bit earlier, but I’m okay.”

He tilted his head and offered them another warm smile, fully aware of how inappropriate it was, yet unable to muster up any ideas of what else to do.

((Apologies for the delay))

They weren't playing. That was good.

But Jaxon noticed above all else that the boy of the group wasn't looking too hot. In fact, he didn't look hot at all. Blood wasn't a good sign, even if it wasn't his. His first instinct was to run, leave them to their possibly crazy ways and find someone else to hook up with. There had to be someone else out there, right?

The guy didn't look crazy, neither did the girl. In fact, they looked positively harmless. If he did take them at face value then he wasn't about to get an axe to the back the moment he turned around. If he didn't, well, he'd just watch them with one eye open. No biggie. Jaxon could escape awkward situations like the best of them.

"Alright, sweet," Jaxon said. "Good to see you didn't die, or kill anyone, I guess."

"Now, I'm kinda exhausted, so you mind if I sit down? Thanks," Jaxon said immediately after, striding past them, dropping his bag, and planting himself in one of the many seats around the salon. He composed himself for a bit.

Only for it to crack slightly. Jaxon placed his face in his hands.

"Fuck..."

Taylor...

Angie breathed a sigh of relief as the tension in the atmosphere began to slowly melt away. Marcus seemed to be calm, but she was still wary of the fact that he had a kill to his name. The other guy wasn't ringing any alarm bells for her at all, so she felt that it would be safe to hang around him for a little while.

Since she was feeling pretty confident that neither of the guys would turn violent, she put her bag on the ground. She stretched and rotated her arm that had been holding the bag. After lugging around that weight for the past couple hours, it felt good to take a load off. Maybe she could break here and grab a snack while she was at it. At least here she was kind of familiar with the surroundings.

As she turned her attention to the other two, she noticed the flashy guy sulking in a seat, his face buried in his hands. He seemed to mutter something, but she didn't quite catch what it was. Nevertheless, she couldn't just leave him there to suffer, so she went over to him to see if she could figure out what was wrong. She knelt down next to his chair and spoke to him softly.

"Hey, is everything okay?"

Marcus’s grin, which had only solidified further as neither Angie nor the boy of multicoloured-hair reacted adversely to his approach, slipped away as he caught sight of the newcomer seating himself and burying his face in his hands. His immediate instinct was to approach him, to offer some warm words to help lift his spirits. Seeing people sad wasn’t something he was used to, and it was second nature to him to try and help and make people happy wherever he could - something which had mercifully persisted even in a place such as this.

Angie clearly had the same idea, having moved to the boy’s side and questioned whether he was alright. She seemed such a caring girl, so much like Eden, in a few ways - dyed hair, artsy, friendly. Maybe she was his chance to make up for what’d happened with Eden; to turn over a new leaf and keep running from what he’d done in the past and what’d happened to him. Maybe both of them were.

Marcus mirrored Angie’s actions, taking the side to the newcomer opposite to Angie before offering him a gentle one-armed hug, careful to avoid getting his bandaged hand involved in the embrace. Physical contact had always been a source of comfort to him, no matter the situation; his parents had been an endless source of hugs to him and his siblings when they were little, and the mindset had rubbed off on him. Dealing with sad people wasn’t his strong suit, but he always figured you couldn’t go wrong with a hug and a few words of comfort, right?

“Shhh, it’ll be alright, pal.” His words were soft and hushed, well-rehearsed from years of practice. “We’re here for you, alright?”

They must have been some great people before everything went to shit. Jaxon didn't mean to make a scene but he couldn't say that was an aspect of his life he was unfamiliar with. He was used to people either being the antagonists or ignoring him in this case, though. At least when he wasn't in good company.

Fuck, good company. That was what this was all about, he'd been here over a day and he'd barely had any company at all, let alone some of the good variation. So when the chick asked him what was wrong and the guy comforted him, he felt like he was finally at home. Or at least in a safe space. Jaxon didn't even care about the possibility that they'd been up to something unsavoury before he arrived and there was room for all of this to go to shit within a split second should they show their true nature. Despite what people thought of him he'd been guarded his whole life when he let people in and this should have been the utmost situation in which he guarded himself. Neither of them were on his team so none of them, or at the very least only one of them, would be alive by the time the whole thing was over.

But he couldn't help but embrace it. Good fucking company. This was the rest stop Jaxon needed on a long and perilous journey.

Jaxon half-heartedly returned the half-hug he recieved from the guy, and shook his head.

"Yeah...yeah, I'm totally fine, thanks."

Jaxon adjusted himself and sat up, pretending nothing was wrong anymore.

"I'm Jaxon, by the way. Jaxon Street, I go to Davison. And before this I was going to be America's next greatest stage actor, but looks like that's out of the fucking equation now. And you guys?"

The flashy guy seemed to be feeling a little bit better. At the very least, he stopped sulking, which was a step in the right direction. He introduced himself as Jaxon Street, and that he was an actor. Or at least he wanted to be an actor, anyway. He extended an offer to Angie and Marcus to introduce themselves. Angie took the opportunity and spoke up.

"I'm Angie Hart, and I'm an artist. I also make some vlogs for YouTube where I talk about my paintings, brush techniques, stuff like that." She paused for a second to see if she could come up with anything else, but decided that she had said all she needed to. Too much and she ran the risk of coming off as arrogant, which she really didn't want to do. "I guess that's pretty much it."

She smiled and turned to Marcus at the end of her introduction. "We both went. Now it's your turn."

Marcus nodded thoughtfully as the boy - whom he now knew was named Jaxon - gave a little information about himself, followed by Angie doing the same. It reminded him of his first day at school, when his teacher had gathered them all into a circle and gotten each of them to introduce themselves and talk about their hobbies and the like. He’d been so eager back then, having formulated a list of things in his head whilst the others talked before cheerfully reciting them when it become his turn. Only this time, when Angie turned towards him and asked him to follow in their footsteps, he was a tad more reluctant to do so.

He hadn’t been shy in opening himself up to people back home, seeing no reason to hide any part of himself for anybody. He trusted them enough that it wouldn’t come back to haunt him or cause him to regret some of the things he said, but after what’d happened here he didn’t think he could feel the same way ever again.

There was little alternative, however. He’d set himself on the path of being just like his old-self again - in appearance, at least - and to backtrack upon it now would leave him with nothing. It’d mean going back to what’d happened with Eden, acknowledging the wrong that he’d done. It’d mean losing Angie and Jaxon; his allies, his friends. He couldn’t let that happen - wouldn’t, rather. He’d do whatever it took to stop being alone, to keep Angie and Jaxon with him, to stop himself from retreating into the darkness he’d experienced before they’d both arrived.

It was a few words, nothing too deep or personal, no risk of opening himself up again and risking being betrayed. Simple.

“I’m Marcus, and I’m from Whittree too - Angie and I had a few classes together there,” he began, sunny tone present throughout each word. “I love cooking and soccer, and I used to study and draw a lot too! I wanted to go to Yale once I left school, to get a good career in the world.”

He stopped himself before he could go any further, before he could give the reason why he wanted to go to an Ivy-League like Yale or Harvard. It was all for his family; every hour of studying had been for them alone, and if he spoke of them and how much he loved and missed them then his guard might slip away and he’d be open to attack. He didn’t think Jaxon or Angie would do anything like that, but after Vahka he knew any preconceptions were completely pointless in a place like this.

“So, yeah! That’s all about me. You seem like a pretty cool guy, Jaxon! And you too, Angie. Wish we’d gotten to know each other a little better back home.”

Marcus seemed way too cheerful for this. Not so cheerful it was offputting, but the amount of cheerful that it was noticeable. Jaxon got that there were people out there who liked to keep positive but there was positivity and there was denial. And Marcus was leaning towards the latter far too much for his liking and for his own well-being.

Angie was thankfully closer to the former.

Of course he wasn't going to stop them. There was nothing to gain right now out of being a dick to either of them. They was probably just how they were, since Wit-tree or wherever they came from was obviously some small town in the middle of Bible Belt America where you could remain optimistic about the world. You always saw their type on reality television. Meanwhile Jaxon liked to think he was some variation of the world-wise cynical who knew people and knew not to trust anyone. He probably wasn't. Actual world-wise cynicals probably had shittier wardrobes and less active sex lives.

"Yeah, I guess if I knew wherever back home was for you two, we could have been friends. Bitchin'."

Jaxon paused for a moment, taking in the awkward silence. He leaned back in his chair. There was a bunch of stuff he could have brought up now, the first and foremost being that the reason he'd been such an eeyore in the first place was because one of his best friends had died over the previous day and he wasn't sure how he felt about it other than angry at the person who killed him (who he was 90% sure didn't even go to his school) and angry at himself for being a selfish c-word the first time he heard about it.

But maybe he just needed to help these two find their way first. Whatever they were up to, as long as it wasn't going to get Jaxon killed, he could tag along with.

"So...what now?"

Angie could feel her spirits starting to lift as the conversation went on. Everyone seemed pretty comfortable introducing each other, and all the tense feelings that had been in the air earlier seemed to have largely dissipated. With everyone being civil and friendly with each other, it was giving Angie hope about the near future. Marcus and Jaxon seemed like a good couple of guys, despite her knowledge of Marcus' killing, and she felt that sticking with them for a while might be good for her.

Jaxon mused about what they should do next, and Angie, although she wasn't sure, decided that she should throw out an idea. "Well, I don't really have any plans, but I just thought that maybe we could stick together for a while? I mean, you both seem nice, and I think that a little trust could go a long way for us." Angie's voice was hopeful, as staying with an actual group sounded far more comfortable to her than roughing it alone. She just had to wait and see how the others felt.

Marcus’s smile remained firmly plastered across his features as his response to Angie’s question was digested by her and Jaxon, all the while wondering whether it’d be acceptable in their eyes or if they’d probe further and force him to reveal something too personal or drudge up Eden. Thankfully, they didn’t - Jaxon instead saying that he thought they could’ve been friends if they’d all attended school together, a comment that only served to make Marcus’s smile more genuine as he replied to his and Angie’s query.

“Mhmm! That sounds like a swell idea, Angie. You’re both pretty awesome folk, and I’d just love to stay with you both as long as we can. And as for what to do next... we could just stay here for awhile, I guess, and maybe get moving in the morning?” He said, drumming his fingers along his chin as he spoke and shifting side to side before continuing. “It’s a tad dark out, and we wouldn’t wanna get spooked by any scary noises in the middle of the night, huh? Besides, I’m pretty tired, and I wouldn’t wanna slow any of you guys down.”

He scarcely paid any attention to his words as they flowed from his mouth, each one punctuated with pep and cheer, his mind continuing to fixate on that one word of Jaxon’s.

Friends.

That’s all he wanted, and something he’d be sorely lacking in after what’d happened. But Jaxon had said so, said that they could’ve, and that singular statement was enough to brighten Marcus’s voice and make it just a little easier to maintain the sunny personality he was trying so desperately to protect. It was probably the first time he’d felt genuinely happy since awakening in the resort, and as soon as the thought rooted itself in Marcus’s mind, he made a decision.

He had to stay with the two of them, at any cost. Keep them all together, do whatever he could to keep his friends with him, because if they left him then what would he have? Nobody. The answer was clear and simple and undeniable, and Marcus knew that he couldn’t let it happen. He’d thought that everybody would hate him for what he’d done, but neither Angie nor Jaxon had shown any signs of doing so. The same couldn’t be said of anybody else, though, and as much as he wanted to pray that people would forgive him and stay his friends, Marcus knew first-hand what that sort of naïvité would bring him.

But in all of that, he allowed himself one sliver of optimism.

Everything would be alright.

Just so long as he wasn’t alone.
