((Anzu Sakamoto: Continued from Listening to Ghosts))

Heartbreak could manifest itself in many forms, Anzu had learned all too well over the past day. For Valerie, pure, white-hot, blistering rage, compelling you to smash everything in eyesight, to reduce your surroundings to rubble. For Caroline, pure, black despair, where letting yourself fade away completely is preferable. Now, standing over the bodies of Ashley and Sarah, Anzu felt nothing but tired resignation.

It might have been different if there had been a reason to avenge them, someone to blame, but the three guns scattered across the scene made the absence of these things perfectly clear: no killer worth anything would leave behind that much firepower. Sarah and Ashley had taken each other out.

It wasn't a surprise, given the fire in Sarah's eyes after Caroline's shooting. Anzu still didn't know who had been truly to blame, back then, but it didn't matter anymore. She was the only one left.

Anzu knelt down and picked up Sarah's axe gun and one of Ashley's pistols, feeling the dried blood on them. Together, the two guns were responsible for the death of Anzu's three best friends. Perhaps before, Anzu would have spat fire at them and flung them across the room, handy scapegoats that wouldn't fight back.

Now, though, she kept a tight hold on them. These were all she could keep to remember them by. Perhaps their memories would help to keep her safe.

Anzu stood up, turning to face Corin. The imbalance in strength that neither of them had acknowledged had now been evened. Hopefully that wouldn't change anything, at least not for the night. "...I'll take first watch, if that's okay with you."

(Corin Albanesi from - Listening to Ghosts)

He quietly observed as she spent a few moments with what was left of her friends, wanting to say something but ultimately not disturbing her. He kept behind her, not levying his own gun as she picked up the weapons but showing an expression that ran along negative and fearful tangents for a moment. His eyes shifted up as she spoke, thought forms behind them as he determined what kind of response he would give.

“It’s alright with me, I think.” His eyes quickly shifted over to the bodies that were once Ashley and Sarah; he was silent another moment before finally coming to a decision.

“But h-hey.” He stepped forward, lifting his free hand to reluctantly grasp Anzu’s shoulder in an attempt to be supportive. He trembled, unsure if it was okay to actually rest it and waited to see if she would recoil or do worse.

“I-I uh… Did you want to talk or need help with…” He gestured towards the others with his head; he couldn’t find a succinct or delicate way of putting it. But at the least it was better than just standing around and watching her deal with it alone. He was getting sick of feeling like a bystander.

“I’ll be awake for a little, but if not I’ll just go and rest like you said.”

For once, Anzu did not lash out at the hand grasping her shoulder, her violent instinctive reactions having faded away like the rest of her energy. Now, she could appreciate the gesture. It was reassuring to know that Corin did care, at least a little.

After a few moments, Anzu turned around and gently brushed Corin's hand away, smiled slightly at him, and laid her guns down to rest on a nearby table. Not a conversation meant to take place with pistols in hand (and really, how many were?).

"Thanks for the offer, but I'd rather... take care of them myself." It was the least she could do for them, after all. Anzu almost bid Corin goodnight so she could get started, but hesitated. She didn't want to be alone, not just yet. She sat down on the edge of the table, facing Corin.

"...What's keeping you going, Corin? Through... well, all this." Anzu smiled sadly. "Me, I thought that if I could somehow stick with my friends, keep them safe, things would work out. You can probly guess how that turned out." She gestured vaguely towards her fallen friends. "...Couldn't protect a single fucking one of them."

As he withdrew his hand it somehow it made him feel a little better, after the last of couple of days where he’d felt like a stray moving from person to person. It was when he’d risked reaching out that he had found some sort of empathy in someone he would never have thought of until the very moment. He risked a small and tentative smile, but wiped it from his features when he spoke up.

“I understand,” he spoke in regard to Ashley and Sarah.

His eyes seemed to draw to her to make contact, when she asked the question he appeared indecisive and unsure.

“I don’t know…” He admitted, he couldn’t answer that when he didn’t take the time to reflect on it. Through all the confusion, he realised that he hadn’t acted on anything as altruistically as Anzu did – he hadn’t actively tried to save anyone.

“I mean I guess I just get really scared, I’m just scared so I keep going.” He glanced down at the bracelet that he wore, as much as he wanted to tell her it was because he wanted to go home he couldn’t. It was because of the implications, because it could only be one of them. Plus it was something so painfully obvious that it need not be said.

“I’m a massive fuck up, so I don’t have anything smart to say about keeping it together.” He let out a sad bitter laugh, thinking about Bunny and Forrest. He thought also of Paisley, who had left him as nothing other than vulnerable and confused.

“I’m sorry, I know it’s not really much of a response.” He scratched the back of his head; wondering what it would have been like if he spoke more to Anzu before the show, in better times.

"No need to apologize." Anzu said, shrugging slightly. "That's about what I've been left with, too. We're just two fuck-ups who've managed to find a bit of company in each other, I guess." Hell, that was practically life itself in a nutshell.

Anzu was just tired, so she kept going. From sheer inertia of living, if nothing else. Even with nothing left and no one to care for, she still didn't want to die. Even without much of a reason to live, there was still a faint hope of somehow getting back home alive. She imagined that Corin the same way.

No thoughts of schemes or betrayals troubled Anzu's mind, at least for the night. If she and Corin stuck together past sunrise, (and she couldn't see much of a reason not to) it was only a matter of time before Jewel or somebody like her came by to bring things to an end. Why rush to end a solid partnership to get one small step closer to home?

Regardless, there were more important things to take care of. Anzu straightened herself up and gestured towards Sarah and Ashley. "I shouldn't leave them for much longer. ...'Night, Corin."

Once he had left, Anzu took care of her friends, one final time.

-

Morning came. Anzu got up and exchanged tired good mornings with Corin, still on watch. Together, they waited for the announcement.

He closed his eyes, exhaling sharply and agreeing with the sentiment, nodding his head. He kept quiet, until she started to excuse herself from the conversation. He raised his rifle over his shoulder, too tired to support it properly now, looking forward to a moment of rest that didn’t consist of being passed out on some stairs. “Yeah, I’ll not keep you.”

Walking away, he found himself a spot, settled in and dropped. He left Anzu to her own devices, sleeping until it was his turn for watch.

---

Nothing happened overnight, no one approached and for that that he was glad. He had been able to rest his body a bit more, eat, sit, stretch and just watch. Still, he was tired and when Anzu approached him his face couldn’t hide it with just his smile. After giving her a simple greeting he anxiously waited for the announcement, it was unwanted but he had to know.

The announcements blared into life, and Corin bit the inside of his cheek. Barely finding it bearable as he counted down the names that he had once known, Naomi, Pia and as the name seemed to peter out, he caught Paisley’s. He had waited specifically to hear that name because he knew the probability was there, but his body registered the shock. He buried his face in his hands, the muscles in his neck relaxed and he started to visibly sink.

“I really liked Paisley.” He blurted out, sobbing softly into his hands.

He wanted to blurt out so many things, and push his personal problems onto Anzu. He wanted the attention; he wanted someone to give him some sort of attention. Stupid ideas raced through his head, dumb worrying phrases about his mental health crossed his mind, but instead he got up from his seat and wiped his eyes on his sleeve, wiped the snot from his nose. Just trying to clear himself up and cover his face for a bit. He didn’t want Anzu to see his vulnerability too long; it was like flashing a bad hand in a poker game. He picked up the rifle, eyeing it as the gears in his head started to turn in strange directions. He needed to step out and be alone for just a moment; piece himself together if that was still something he was able to do somehow.

“We should get going, I’ll wait for you outside and we’ll leave when you’re ready.”

He hoisted his bag back onto his shoulder; it was starting to feel a little bit light now. As he was greeted by the chill of the outside his thoughts were still turning in the direction of Paisley. As much as he liked her, and as much as he wanted to remember her memory in a good light, he knew he didn’t have the capacity to fully forgive her. Still, he had space to push some of the blame onto himself; those thoughts were underpinned by a deep and painful regret.

He waited for Anzu to come rescue him from his negative thoughts.

The names came and went, as they did.

Corin took Paisley's death hard. Part of Anzu wanted to reach out, to try and comfort him and repay him for the previous night, but she stopped herself. Corin's grief was much more raw than hers had been, and any potential intrusions upon it seemed like they would be unwelcome.

He gathered up his equipment and headed out into the morning. Not wanting to keep him waiting, Anzu followed suit, collecting her pistols and bag and joining him, as they faced one more day together.
